Since I am (a) not a native English speaker and (b) interact in English mostly in its written form, even if I know an idiomatic expression as idiomatic, I can't help seeing through it to the words in their original meaning. I'm reading Lucy Mangan's Bookworm, because how can I resist a memoir about books? However, I am probably getting a sort of impression from it quite different from its intended readers. Let's see: I haven't finished anything of what I was reading but I actually finished listening to an audio book - Boris Akunin's second volume of "History of the Russian State" - the one about the Mongolian invasion.
