Dongho fights with his biggest hyung often, he knows. And to be quite fair, so does the rest of U-KISS. The two just didn’t match. Or as Kiseop had mused one fine morning soon after joining the group, they matched too well. They could argue for hours on end about something ridiculous simply because they were both too stubborn to back down. Xander, being the oldest, naturally had a greater instinct to correct the others, something most of them had gotten used to, whether or not they agreed: it was a matter of respect, after all.

Dongho, however, was exactly the sort to ask why? and start a fight, leaving the other members to sigh in exasperation before intervening to cool them down. Then Dongho would sulk in a corner, mumbling to himself, playing games on his phone. Alexander would roll his eyes and go on Twitter to chat with fans instead, passing a snide remark about how some people understood him better.

It was odd, really. While all of this went on, the other five would sit in a line along the wall in a slightly awkward silence. It wasn’t that Dongho and Xander didn’t like each other. Kevin voiced his opinion that they did and that was the problem, which was met with hearty agreement by the rest. It...just didn’t make sense.

On a good day Soohyun would snicker at the two of them quarrelling and shout you guys are practically married! and with the help of Eli, run around annoying them until they stop shouting at each other and start shouting at the people interrupting them instead. Generally this would end up with all of U-KISS running around the dance room until Kibum comes back from his toilet break: at which he will either ask them what on earth are you doing?! (causing them to halt their ridiculous games of catch) or join them.

One day, though, Dongho is doing his homework during a break (life as an idol still in school sucks, he says, but the rest of them can only sympathize) when Xander plops down next to him wordlessly (which is unusual) and watches him do his math homework (which is even more unusual; generally he tells him what to do). He doesn’t think much of it, though, figuring maybe he’s getting everything right for once. No sooner is he done than the worksheet is whipped out of his hands, and his utter annoyance is only mildly diminished when he looks up to see his hyung’s (rather adorable, he admits begrudgingly) concentrated expression as he scrutinizes the worksheet.

“Pen.” A tanned hand is held towards him expectantly. Dongho, confused, stares at it.

“What?”

“Pass me a pen, will you? Or a pencil. Geez.”

Still somewhat dumbfounded, he scrambles for a writing instrument to pass to the older boy. Man, he corrects himself in his head, because Xander-hyung is an adult. Only he doesn’t seem like one at all, really.

“Here.”

A few minutes later his worksheet is returned to him, covered in scribbles. Dongho eyes it with some distaste; couldn’t Alexander have told him that while he was still doing it? He turns towards him to express this, and is met with a curious sight: Xander is twiddling his thumbs awkwardly, seemingly engrossed in counting the number of fingernails he had (10, thankfully, but he thought he’d better check a few times to make sure).

“...Hyung?” The silence is unnatural and rather unnerving as a result, so the bewildered maknae tries to break it with an utterance of sorts.

“Dongho. You... don’t like that I let you do everything before telling you it’s all wrong, right?” he voices, still not looking up.

“-Ah...yeah.” Dongho cannot hide his curiosity at how his hyung understands.

“You see, that’s why I’m always scolding you all the time. I ... guess I don’t want you to make mistakes much, even in small things. If you know what to avoid you’ll never go wrong, that’s...sort of what I’m thinking?” Alexander looks up here, his own confused expression taking way some of Dongho’s irritation as well. “And I know that’s probably not right, which is also probably why you get annoyed, but....Ijustdon’twantyoutogethurt.” The last part is muttered in a rushed slur, words tumbling and collapsing upon each other. Alexander’s eyes are not meeting his dongsaeng’s because a sudden wave of oh-my-god-what-did-I-just-say seemed to have taken over his entire countenance, forcing him to behave rather like a shy six year old.

Dongho stares at the oldest member of U-KISS acting like a child for a few seconds before bursting into very sudden laughter. It goes as quickly as it comes, though, and he scoots over to his hyung with a hug which they both lean into. It is oddly comfortable, and Dongho (to some of his own embarrassment) finds his heart overwhelmed by a funny warm fuzzy feeling.

“You’re not mad?” Xander sounds and looks ridiculously small when he asks this, large eyes peeking directly into his own.

“No - why would I be?”

“I dunno,” comes the response with a bit of a huff, “you get mad at pretty much everything I tell you.”

Dongho is about to retaliate, but, seeing some grain of truth in the statement, he decides to give in this once, making a muffled “hmph” as he settles for snuggling into Alexander’s side contently.

There is a sound of footsteps. “DAAAAD,” Eli calls, “Mom’s at it with the dog again!!!” Snickering and a high pitched giggle (most definitely Kevin) follow.

But neither of them mind things this way, and that’s one thing they certainly agree on.
