I got into it so young that I don't remember a time when I didn't draw. My mom would just carry around paper and pens to keep me busy. I've ran across pictures I'd drawn when I was 2 and 3, and not just scribbles...you can actually tell that they are cats and dogs and birds. I pretty much just drew animals until middle school when I started drawing fantasy stuff (and needed to learn how to draw elves!). I stuck with animals and fantasy through highschool and discovered furry when I was in college...although I had drawn anthro characters from an early age. My mom's side of the family was pretty artistic though, so I like to think I got it from them. I've always been encouraged to develop my art and I think it surprised quite a few people when I decided to go for a zoology degree rather than an art degree.
Why did you decide to not go for an art degree? I decided that I'd rather keep art a hobby, something I could enjoy when I wanted, rather than have to draw things on a schedule. If I had gone for an art degree I would totally have focused on ceramics anyway (not drawing/painting) and what kind of job could I have gotten with that? Teaching was the only thing I could think of. Bleh.
