How do you use "lang"? Where do you place it in a complete sentence? I know it means "only", but my friend used it today, and he only said, "joke lang." ...so i'm not exactly sure if i'm using it correctly ( Read more... )

lang does indeed mean only, but i don't think it means just that. In your friend's context it's something like "it's only a joke", but the word's usage straddles a whole other bunch of colloquialisms such as "wala lang" ("no reason"), or "teka lang" (wait), or "yun lang" (that's all), etc. I'm actually not sure how to explain how its used because it's used so often and in so many different ways, but i don't think it's wrong to say that if you want to say "only", you may use lang.

Rough translation:

You seem to be always frowning
As if you are the only one who owns
All the disappointment
Your face can't be painted
Have you forgotten to laugh
Eh, your bottom lip is falling to the ground [you're frowning so much]

chorus:
No matter who is responsible
For your failure
Just think that life
Sometimes plays jokes
We're here, your true friends
Singing to you
In sadness and joy, hardship and ease
We're with you
(Okay, your turn)

If in love we had arguments
If it's money, let's not talk about it
We don't count it [we're not keeping tabs]
If your problems are piling up
And you cannot pay your debts
Everything can be settled by talking

(back to chorus)

"lang" sort of deprecates ... like "just"
Isa lang -- just one, only one
versus kaisa-isa, or iisa -- one and only

Joke lang -- "just a joke"

"madali lang" -- pretty easy / pretty simple (or not hard)
versus napakadali -- so easy

"mabilis lang" -- just a quick thing/job

everyone else pretty much covered the meaning of "lang" already. i agree, it means "only", but it's been used in other phrases to mean something else such as "kaso lang", "teka lang", which would mean "but" and "wait" respectively.

and just as they have said, you're friend meant that what s/he said is only a joke by saying "joke lang". :D

i'm not good at comforting phrases, but you could tell her that everything will be fine, and she'll get better: magiging ayos din ang lahat. gagaling din si lola. :D
