Nov 20, 2007 14:17

The story is set at Brussels-based GIJOE, an acronym for the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, and revolves around an international co-ed force of operatives who use high-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil org headed by a Scottish arms dealer. - Comingsoon.net

Was horrified at the suck of Planet of the Apes. Refused to see Doom. Don't even know what Dark is Rising is.

Oh, and as a side note - this is one of those few "Public" Posts I do. This is unfiltered and NOT Friends only. I WANT some Google Spider to see it.

Well Bill, I hate George Bush and ACTIVELY give money and time to stop the war on terror, but would never call myself anything but a patriot. Does making their movie more appropriate to the times make it anti-American? I am less of a citizen because I don't agree with our current president? And what, is wrong with communism?

You didn't read the rant thoroughly enough.

Just because you all hate George Bush and the War on Terror doesn't mean you have to sully something that is good and predates the current events

Perhaps I should have worded it slightly different for clarity, not sure, but this is saying I don't care if you gate George Bush and the War on Terror, don't spread the hate to the meaning behind G.I.Joe which IS the U.S. troops.

I'm cool with you hating Bush and cool with you trying to stop the War on Terror. And I'm not saying anyone is anti-patriotic for it. This rant is specific to taking the American out of "A Real American Hero" (the subtitle of the show).

Also, the show was never about "the times" for it to be updated. They created Cobra as an enemy that was just that, an enemy, bent on world domination

I meant to bold the word PREDATES.

I think that no matter how I respond I will offend some friends so I'm taking the road of saying nothing at all.

And what "in theory" is wrong with communism is what I meant to say.

As for the "in theory" faults of communism it negates the incentive behind personal excellence because it punishes the hardest working and most intelligent members of society by taking from them the excesses earned from their superior efforts by giving the excess to those who did earn them.

to those who did NOT earn them. Man I really should reread shit for errors.

You're wrong about punishing the most intelligent. Those members would actually be allowed to be scientists, artists, engineers, architects (hhhhmmm, architects are yummy *goes to daydream*... so, what was I talking about?), etc. And it wouldn't be the same situation we have here in the US where the kids that go to Harvard go because their parents went and they could afford to. In Soviet Russia those that were actually smart were given the opportunity to do something with it. Now I'm not suggesting that everyone that goes to Harvard is a legacy or that there is no veracity to the fact that its an excellent school, but I am suggesting that overall in the US money begets money and the most intelligent and most capable are not often the ones that are most rewarded. Those of us from middle class families just can't fight through all the challenges in order to really make the most we could of ourselves.

The original action figure came out in 1964 and was, as you note, an American G.I. It was followed up in 1966 by additional soldiers from England, France, Germany, and others - including an astronaut figure. In 1970 Hasbro attempted to downplay the war aspects of the toy (post Vietnam and all) and changed the look of the original GI Joe over to the bearded appearance of the UK 'Action Man' - and that version led a multi-national Adventure Team that was far more of a spy/adventure organization. The eighties version, by no means the first incarnation of the toy, was based as "America's highly trained special mission force" because its entire purpose was to sell toys and merchandise to American kids ( ... )

That, at least was a well thought out response (versus others I have dealt with the last 24 hours or so on some other LJ stuff). Thank you, it was refreshing.

What I haven't illustrated clearly is that most adults, especially those raised during the 80s "Yo Joe!" era see G.I. Joe as representing the American Military fighting a threat to freedom. I definitely know, from first hand experience and interaction with servicemen around the globe, that both American and foriegn military folk view G.I. Joe as representing the American Military ( ... )
