It's live swimming through treacle trying to get medical data on Trans people. We know far too little about long-term effects of HRT, what are optimum doses, which estrogenic molecules are dangerous, when to switch...

So many get treatment, get a new life, and disappear off the radar. Are they OK? Are the dead? We don't know. And while we don't know, we can't fight the calls for the banning of surgery as "not of proven effectiveness" so well. Yes, there are some studies. But we need more.

These "squeakings of the laboratory mice" are useful from a clinical sense. They express *why* we have problems obtaining co-operation from experimental subjects. We need to figure out how we can ameliorate these concerns so we can do our work. Oh yes, and did I mention these are human beings we're talking about? That maybe they just have a point? That we are scientists, but also have a certain responsibility to be at least minimally human too?

And yes, some of us can walk and chew gum at the same time, research but also campaign for human rights
