Have been obsessed with getting the garden in shape this year. We finally took the plunge and made raised beds for the veg garden in the back. It was a lot of work for two fat older people, but I think it will have been worth it. A kudos for concentrating on The Basics. Yeah, improving the (vegetable garden) soil by digging at least two feet deep, screening it through 1-inch mesh, and adding a lot of organic material (you did do all that, thoroughly, didn't you? Not that you're required to answer this) is A Whole Lot Of Work. It doesn't make you any younger (I say, having recently done about a hundred cubic feet of this, at the age of 82), but it might have made you slightly less fat.

Congrats on all of the progress! I look forward to seeing it someday. Raised beds are really wonderful, imho. In theory, just having mounds should be the same, but it's not.

I recommend laying down a thick layer of cardboard and wood chips in the paths to keep weeding down to a minimum. I don't mind weeding the beds, but weeding paths always seems such a irritating use of time. Wish I were there to help out!
