Dragon Con, Part 2

Sep 26, 2010 02:58

Back to part one.

Saturday.

Saturday dawned bright and early, and we were ready to hit the convention. (Literally, it seems. Lol Daniel.)
It was Stan Lee day, so nariana_staris  wore her Marvel pants and Captain America underwear, LOL

I started off the day wearing Katara.
(As the Painted Lady, circa Last Airbender season 3)

I went to a panel on how to turn cosplaying into a business, and I happened across a few other Avatar cosplayers that told me there was a group photo shoot happening upstairs at the Marriott. YAY!

(The only group shot that I don't have a picture of is the water nation shot, because I was in it.)

It was so much fun to do a group sheet with total strangers! I loved getting to see some of the minor characters represented. My favorite? THE CABBAGE MERCHANT!! :D :D :D

The fire nation didn't have a lot of cosplayers but they had a really wide range of characters - Mai, the Painted Lady, and the Blue Spirit aren't very common. The Blue Spirit mask was AWESOME.

This chick really nailed Zuko.
Heh. I wish I could nail Zuko. /totally inappropriate

And of course you can't have Zuko and the Blue Spirit without having some Zuko v Zuko action.

The Blue Spirit had this white board and kept erasing it and writing different things. HYSTERICAL.

We did a group shot of all of the Kataras with Aang. There was only one Aang and he said he was nervous being around so many girls, and we told him that was okay - that just meant he was in character. LOL.

When we get our group shots, the Painted Lady and I had to be in different nations, because I am from the water nation and she is technically from the fire nation.

(I was cosplaying a girl that was cosplaying the lady she was cosplaying. HOW META.)

We still wanted pictures together, so we decided to do her own shots. Sadly the person I that had my camera wasn't really able to frame the shot the way it looked in my head, but these turned out okay. I just wish I had one that was straight on, but it was pretty crowded up there.

Also? It's really hard to know which camera to look at when there are 50 cameras going off in your face at once.
I don't know how the guys do it - but I kind of love it a lot, lol.
/*picture!whore*

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dragon Con 2010. WOOT! SO MUCH FUN.

THE CABBAGE MERCHANT!! Apparently you have to buy these Momos two at a time, and this little Katara was so sweet and fell in love with the Momo so much that the Cabbage Merchant GAVE IT TO HER.
How awesomely adorable is that?

After the Avatar shoot, I changed clothes and ran to meet nariana_staris  to sit in the line for STAN LEE!
(I have to put his name in all caps because he's MOTHEREFFING STAN LEE. Obviously.)

The line ended up being insane, but we got into it pretty early on, so we didn't have to wait too long. The weather was GORGEOUS and it was actually nice to sit down for a while, after the Friday I'd had the day before. We ate food, which was AWESOME, and is something you should absolutely never forget to do at a con. One day I'll type up con-going tips, maybe. I have so many.

STAN LEE was absolutely amazing. Being in the room with him really feels like you're in a room with a legend. And you are in the room at the legend - I mean it's STAN LEE, but at the same time it's such a surreal experience you have to sort of stop and go to yourself 'This is real' while you're watching the panel so that when it's over you don't think  'Wait - did that just happen?' Lol.

We had really good seats, but my camera didn't take great pictures of the stage from where we were, so here's a picture of the screen. He is just the cutest old man, and so enthusiastic about his life and his work and his upcoming projects. He even talked about The Big Bang Theory, which was hilarious because on The Big Bang Theory he played himself, but as a jerk. He said he would never act like that to fan in real life.

- Spiderman, Iron Man, and the X-Men are his favorite comic-to-movie adaptations. he loves Robert Downy Junior. (Who doesn't?)
- The movie he is most looking forward to coming out next its Ant Man. O.o He's just as surprised as we are.
- He is petitioning the Academy Awards to add an Oscar for best cameo, because he wants an Oscar. I'm not even kidding.

It was a really great panel and I'm glad I went, even though I missed yet more Firefly. I figure the Firefly cast will still be around for a few years, you know?

STAN LEE.

After STAN LEE it was time to head to the walk of fame to meet Mark Sheppard!!!!! Easily my favorite fan encounter the whole con. I have lots of stuff about him.

This section is VERY mildly spoilery for 5.4, also upcoming character spoiler for 6.1 and a future episode regarding Corin Nemec.

Mark Sheppard Part 1

Mark was so nice and so pleased to be at the con. (And I was pleased to meet him - his voice is twice as awesome in person.)

I said hello and that I was a fan of several of his shows, specifically Supernatural, and then I laughed and said "This might be weird, but - " and I handed him my copy of Good Omens to sign. He stared at it a second and then he started laughing. “Alright, yeah!” I asked if he’d read it and he said no, but he was aware that Crowley was based VERY closely on the book. I told him that I read it after I’d seen him on the show, and he was totally Crowley to me. He was pleased and said "I’ve got an idea!" and signed the back of the book as Crowley like it was his official book review.

I asked how he liked it up there on the Supernatural set and he said it was great, he loves it and he’s going to be back in season 6, did I know? I laughed and said of course. He had a picture on his table of Crowley and the older banker guy kissing and he kept pointing at it and saying ‘I have this print, have you seen it?’ like it was his favorite picture.  He also had a pin that a fan made him that said 'Mine's bigger', lol, and he was pointing it out to EVERYONE with such enthusiasm. He also told us that he has a t-shirt a fan made him that says 'Lovers in League Against Satan' and has flowers all over it, and he wears it all the time.

I asked him how it compared working with the two white collar guys vs the J’s; who was the bigger goofballs, he laughed really hard and said there is NOBODY goofier than Jared and Jensen. “But,” he said, “They’ve had much longer to practice.”

He said he’s never worked on a set where there was so much deliberate farting and that it’s a long-time running joke at this point. He wanted to know if we saw the gag reel yet, lol, and then he mimed the part where he swirls the scotch and says he needs a better scotch to go with the fart.

He signed my poster and my firefly cast print and reminded me that Corin Nemec was also in the building.

I was getting my picture with him when he got all excited and wanted to know if we had seen the comic con footage of the clip of Jensen’s episode yet on youtube, and I said no, we had been behaving, lol. He was like ‘WHY NOT!? Go watch it, it’s brilliant!’ Lol, he’s SO proud of the episode. He said it couldn’t possibly count as spoilery because it’s something that OBVIOUSLY has to come back up again at some point. He said that Bobby summons him and the way the scene plays is brilliantly done and he loved it.

He said he was long overdue to play a sexually ambiguous crossroads demon and I laughed and said but all of his characters are evil, and he agreed but he said what he mainly meant was that America is so touchy about guy-on-guy action in television that it’s super rare to have 2 guys kiss at all, let alone 2 guys who aren’t considered sexy. So he was happy to get to do that over here. I laughed and asked him what was he talkin' 'bout, Bobby is DEAD SEXY, and he lost it.

He gave me a quick hug and had to go back to his table, and said I should go meet Corin and that we should watch the clip, because it’s awesome!!

Corin Nemec

So I took Mark's advice and floated over to meet Corin. I know I should have gotten a picture with him, you guys - but Dragon Con just makes me SO FRAKING BROKE. (Lol, that was actually a typo, but in the spirit of the geekiness of this post I'm leaving it.)

I was torn about Corin b/c I haven’t met his character yet, and I’m running out of space on my poster - I can’t just give all the rest of the space to just anyone, but on the other hand, if Corin’s character turned out to be cool and I had the chance to add him and I didn’t, I’d be pissed at myself later. So I went to meet him and I asked him his opinion, LOL.

He seemed very amused at the fact that a fan was asking him if he thought his character deserved a spot on an Epic Poster of Epicness site unseen - but he said he was recurring and I took into consideration that he’s a blood relative, and we mutually decided to go for it. He wrote ‘Christian Campbell’ under his signature so that I wouldn’t lose track of which one was him.

(lower left)

I asked him if they were treating him nice up there and he said he was flying back up on the 9th for another episode!
We both laughed a lot and he was very friendly and seemed glad to be part of the team. He’s very tall and has blond hair and super sparkly blue eyes, which I noticed when he shook my hand and winked at me.  We told him we were looking forward to liking his work.

Idk, it totally tickles me that I might actually be the first person in fandom to have Christian Campbell's autograph. LOL. I'm going to hate Christian, aren't I?

*is tickled*

Cutest cosplay of the day, IMO. If I ever have kids ...

Saturday night we watched the screening of Browncoats Redemption, a fan-made sequel to Serenity. The venue was PACKED. This pic was taken well before the crowd came into the room. Redemption is a pretty cool project; and it has cameos from a few of the Firefly guest stars and also Adam Baldwin in it. All proceeds for Redemption dvds ect go to charity. I thought the script was really good - the directing was painful in places, but it was a fan-made film that went viral and got famous, so it's not like they were thinking so much about that when they shot it. Over all, I'd have enjoyed it more in a different venue - the sound was AWFUL - but it was pretty cool either way to be in a room with so many other Browncoats!

BROWNCOATS FOREVER!!!! *fistpump*

Sunday

Sunday was Supernatural cosplay day!! The first thing that happened was that DEAN decided her hair was ALL WRONG OMG, and attacked it with a pair of my sewing scissors. THAT'S DEDICATION, PEOPLE.

THIS is our shoot from last year, when we just shot ourselves.
(That sounds wrong)

This year the character set was a little different. Our main goal was to reproduce the photo taken in Bobby's house in Abandon All Hope, so instead of Pamela and Mary, lotr_lemmy  and I were Ellen and Jo.

We shot at what I just call The Arch, which is a staple Dragon Con photo hotspot. We were lucky it was free, TBH. Sometimes there is a line there, lol. We shot there last year too - it's just so perfect for Supernatural shoots. There were a ton of really cool churches we'd have loved to shoot at, but they were all way too far away to walk to.

This year, we did the shoot with rivercritter , who also did my Snapdragon shoot on Friday. SO MUCH FUN. There were tons of costume changes, too. I did Jo and Anna, and Sam and Dean rotated shirts depending on what Ep we were shooting. We also had lots of props. Seriously, I could do this EVERY DAY.

rivercritter  kept pulling up reference pics on her Iphone, Lol. SHOOT WILL BE EPIC. It's not posted yet, but I'll link it when I can. Here are a few I took of the group while we were shooting.

ETA: She finished the Abandon All Hope picture!!!! AHHHH. *dies* It is AMAZING AND I LOVE IT.

This year we had ALL the Winchester brothers - even Adam. *loves*

Forced perspective was our friend.

Another of my famous backwards pictures - Ellen and Jo!

This Jo, from Bobby's kitchen in Abandon All Hope, is easily the most awesome cosplay I have ever done. JEANS+T-SHIRT=DONE. Lol. I could get used to that. It was a BITCH finding Jo's exact T-shirt, though. Show bought her a SPECIFIC Misfits T from the summer '09 tour - which is brilliant and keeps the show ever-so-subtely in real time - but makes the shirt really hard to find. However, google-fu prevailed, and now I own it! Squee.

(You only see the logo in like, 2 frames - BUT IT IS THE EXACT SHIRT, dangit, and that counts for something in cosplay land, y/y?)

Teaser of what some of the final shoot pics will end up looking like. ^.^

DANG IT CAS, GET OFF THE PHONE.
*lol*

Mark Sheppard, part 2

We found out that rivercritter didn't know Mark was at the con!! Which was just wrong. So we took her to meet him.

He remembered us and asked if we’d seen the clip by now and we said no, our internet was spotty. So he described it for us in great detail, lol. Somehow we got to talking about the Impala. He said the first time he opened the trunk and popped the lid on the weapons box, he said “Holy f*&#!”, lol. “There are so many weapons in there!”  Mark said Jensen is the best driver ‘of that thing’, that he’s been in it when they did stunts and Jensen handles her like a pro and it was really fun.

Then he smiled at me and said “You just have to watch out for Gigantor.” and I laughed and nodded wisely and he lowered his voice and drawled, “Where’s your moose?” and I squeed and told him that was our FAVORITE line and he said “Mine too!”

rivercritter was amazing and bought us a group photo with him to round out her shot set.
IT IS EPIC. IT EVEN HAS A GHOST IN IT.

(Ghost, Adam, Castiel, Ellen, Bobby, Crowley, Jo, Dean, Sam)

We had to switch fandom gears a little then. This is me and lotr_lemmy  checking to make sure we look ok before we meet Summer Glau, lol.

Summer was a sweetheart and she said my nails were cute. D'awww.

After Summer we also met Morena, Sean, and Jewel. They were all so nice - Sean was soooo quiet and shy. Not a bad percentage of the main cast for my first go-around - Mark signed the bottom right hand side, and drew a little picture of Badger's bowler hat. *loves Mark*

Ran into Rufeo and Fiona in there. I WANT FIONA'S EARS.

Laura's dad got to sort of kind of touch Barbara Eden. This is his happy face.

Ok, I am not a Rocky fan - I've never even SEEN it all the way through - but Patrica Quinn was ADORABLE and HILARIOUS. I totally fell in love with her. Such a diva, but so welcoming. Good times.

We were leaving Summer Glau's line and I did a double-take and was all HOLY CRAP, and there was Rekha Sharma.

Two words: POCKET ROCKET. She was so happy someone came to talk to her, lol. She had a Kali picture, and I handed it to her and said 'I need this', and she said, 'NEED!!!!! :D :D :D' and just gave me the biggest smile, lol. She was adorable. I wanted to put her in my pocket and keep her forever just like Gabriel Tigerman. She said she adored Richard and that her episode was so much fun. I always love getting to talk to guest stars. Turns out she was also in AVP: Requiem. It was on her bio list at the table and I was like 'NO WAY, who were you in Requiem?!', and she was like *eyeroll*, 'Some dead nurse in the hospital, LOL.'

Next to her I look positively gigantic, but I like this picture. :)

*Firestarter!love*

Also met THE WEASLY TWINS! Just the twins, not Ron or Ginny - but DUDE. Super cute, super nice guys. They love the theme park and said they stayed in Tampa last time they were down. TAMPA. I was like I LIVE THERE COME STAY WITH ME. *shifty eyes* Lol, not out loud. But on the inside, I was. Anyway, they are doing final post-production pickups, ADR and such, for DH part 2, and then they are DONE. Their hair is already back to dark brown. Did I mention they were adorable?? They were adorable.

While we were in the walk of fame, SAM texted us to let us know that he now had Herpes and The Clap.

BRB, LOLING FOREVER.

So that was it for my poster for the con - 2 new autographs. Sadly I didn't have it with me when I saw Rekha, but I have several minor non-recurring characters on their own photos, so that's ok. (Julie Benz, etc.)

NEEDS MOAR JDM.

Random cosplay sniping around the Marriott atrium level.

Electra and Weeping Angel

Invader Zim (y/y?) and Random Fandom guy!! Laura's dad needs this T-shirt.

We went to watch the Guild with Vork and Zaboo and the director. Those guys are just as funny as you'd think in rl. We watched 5 episodes, including on that hadn't aired yet as a special treat. So much fun! I bought the s1-s2 combo pack DVDs and they all signed it. Sandeep wrote, 'To Ginger, YUM!', because he thought my name was hot, lol.

Because I had to. It's like a tax law or something. :D

Two total badasses.

Magical Trevor and Jewbacca!

TheTrogdor is my husband's PS3 handle. Lol.

Late Sunday night after a short nap, I joined the group to wait in line for a film screening where they showed a bunch of short comedy films that were all a little twisted. While we waited, I sniped pics of all the cool cosplayers walking by.

This Whiplash, from Iron Man 2, was so cool. His whips even lit up. The other pic was so awesome - these two guys were walking around together all night, and you could only take pics of them if you took a pic of them both. So cute. Na'vi and Pappa Smurf. We called it 'Evolution of a species' - LOLOLOLOL.

Super cutesy Rainbow Bright and EPIC KRATOS OMG. He doesn't look REAL, does he? His GF told me it took the artist 3 hours to airbrush him. He won the hall costume contest. SO EPIC.

I enjoy regular clothes day (even though I'm technically still Jo here) b/c I get to do things like wear my Appa hat that I got this year at MetroCon. Also, Max!

The film festival was great. My favorite vid was a vid called 'Whaling and the inherent dangers therin', because it was SO hyperserious I couldn't quit laughing. It was epic. We met the director and got a dvd of it from him for free. I LOVE DRAGON CON, OKAY.

Whaling and the inherent dangers therin trailer, which does not at all hint to how funny it is.

There was also this AWESOME one called Skylight, which starts off all innocent and then turns into a thing about how the hole in the ozone layer is cooking animals. It's hard to describe, but it was hysterical and satirical and we were ROLLING in our chairs. The animation was adorable. Online there is only the intro clip, but here it is.

Skylight Intro Clip

Lotr_lemmy found the most disturbing one we saw. I'm going to have to recommend that you not watch it if you don't like gore. Seriously, it's like Piranhas 3-d with Christmas trees.

TREEVENGE

We walked to our 24 hour cafe after the film festival, and we invented a game. I called it the X-manhole game, b/c every now and then you find one of these bad boys.

When you see one, you must step on it and name an X-man. It sounds easy, but you can't repeat a name, and in a group of about 8 people times about 12 covers between us and the diner - that is a LOT of X-men. :) Good times.

At the diner, I may or may not have been wearing my stormtrooper hoodie with the Appa hat.
*shifty eyes*

Monday

Monday morning the Firefly panel that I WAS going to make it to was canceled. SIGH. We didn't really have anything else to do, so we headed over to some random panel we thought looked interesting - a panel with the voice actors from the animated Star Wars; Clone Wars series.

On the way there, I made a new friend b/c his T-shirt told me to. He was awesome and his roomates had all left the con already, so he followed us around all day. People make fun of me for picking up loners at cons - but I do the cons alone a lot, and I always manage to find a group to attach myself to, and that's how you meet cool people. He is on the Book of Face, and he lives where I go for vacation with my grandparents every year, 3 states from here, and so who knows - I may see him again one day! :D

(Plus I would like to add that if not for my predisposition for picking up random life-long friends at cons, blacklid  and lotr_lemmy  and I would not know each other. So there.)

We dragged him to the Clone Wars panel and DUDE. BOBBA FETT WAS THERE! And the cast was so awesome! And they talked about that show the way that I talk meta about The Last Airbender ... I so need to watch that show now!

(I also pick up new fandoms at cons. That is less good.)

We also attended the first ever Dragon Con has talent. I didn't like the format - it needed to be a talent show and not a gong show - the judges were rushing the acts b/c they were impatient and we didn't get to see a lot of really good acts finish, boo. But I lost my voice yelling at the judges, so that was fun. Lol. One of the top winners was a girl in full blue latex cosplay singing Il Dolce Suono from The 5th Element. AWESOME.

We ate dinner at Vortex one more time.

Then we went back to the hotel, watched Star Wars, traded pictures, passed out, woke up early, and went home.

Oh and I got new contacts.

That's all she wrote for another year, folks!

*goes to bed*
