If you're going to use a middle man, then have him tell you everything, from the beginning. Tell him you want to know every detail, if that's still the case... otherwise, tell him that you appreciate it, but that you think it would do more harm than good.
I don't know if I can help you on this; only you can know whether it would give you peace or cause you pain to really learn the details of how your mom died.
The important things you already know: she died, she loved you, you still communicate with her, and maybe that's enough? I don't know. But I wish you the best for this school year and I hope that whatever you decide, it enables you to go on with strength.
