I'd like to transfer money to a friend in the US regularly. Paypal will do this for the privilege of collecting interest on the money for a week on my end and a week on my friend's end. (how long they take to process moving money from a bank account to paypal account or back

Some Canadian banks have partnerships with US banks. If you can find one of those, you might be able to set up a recurring ACH transfer between your account and the other party's. I don't know if there are any actual international banks that take personal deposits, but having your account and the other party's at the same bank would be the easiest way to facilitate it.

I've been using PayPal for a number of years and it's been fairly good in recent years. I set up a secondary account the just handles PayPal transactions so if they ever try to mess with my bank account it doesn't matter. There is also AlertPay which is a Canadian service and seems fairly good overall, I've had no qualms with them.
