His Dark Material

Being quite sick, and also not too well and slightly under the weather last week, I had time to (huzzah) finish my paper for next Friday's post-graduate seminar (anyone who wants to hear me talk about the social classes of pre-Christian Ireland, come Friday at 4 in room K114, all welcome), and also to read three books by Philip Pullman. I love Philip Pullman. The Ruby in the Smoke is probably the most simplistic of the Sally Lockhart series - they are all much less complex than His Dark Materials, but they are good fun. I liked the third and fourth ones best.

As sea_of_tethys pointed out the Sally Lockhart series does most definatly improove... I've read the Shadow in The North more times then I care to count... The Tiger in The Well is also good, but the Tin Princess (which is an off shoot) is extremely dissapointing in my opinion. I don't know if you have started to read the other or not, but I'd say its worth a day to give em a go... So go... Read em... now!
