Title: It's the Cold
Rating: PG
Summary: Dominic and Rory live next door but it's only one winter day that brings them closer
Dominic thought Rory Matthews didn't care about him one bit when he left him alone in the boys' toilets after seeing his bruised face. He heard only later that Rory had flushed Jamie Thompson's head in the toilet. The whole school was talking about it. The rumour told that Rory had threatened to smash his Audi's windows if he ever laid a finger on Dominic again. Dominic couldn't believe it, but Jamie Thompson had only given Dominic a murderous look when they passed each other after class and actually looked scared to come anywhere near him that afternoon. Dominic had to believe the rumour was true. No one dared to mess with Rory Matthews. He was one of the cool guys, never giving a damn about what people said about him. And still, for some reason, they all respected him. His very impressive right hook might have had something to do with it as well.
Dominic thought that Rory looked like the bad boy. His shoulder length hair was nearly black and it matched his equally dark eyes. He wore worn jeans and a black leather jacket. He had a motor bike. Still, what most people noticed first about him was his attitude. But what Dominic knew was that, in reality, he wasn't the bad boy.

Rory hated Jamie Thompson. It wasn't an accident that he had come into the toilets even though that's what Dominic thought. He had begun keeping an eye on Dominic since he had noticed he got into a lot of trouble. He was an outcast and idiots like Thompson didn't hesitate use it against him. Rory himself was also an outcast but in a different way. So he waited for Dominic after school.
It's the way he looks so pathetic, Rory thought. He was sitting at a bus stop beside Dominic whose left eye was as swollen as his nose. He offered a bottle of whiskey to Dominic again and he took a swig and coughed. Dominic was too scared to go home beaten, so they sat in the cold. He looked like hell. Rory offered him some more whiskey and Dominic could start feeling numb, even the cold wasn't so bad anymore. They talked about school and their families. It was the first time they talked to each other like normal people despite knowing what time the other one went to bed, who they brought home (mainly Rory) and hearing what music they played. Rory lived next door to Dominic, had lived for years. They had a direct view to each others' rooms from their windows. They weren't best friends, not even friends, but in a weird way they were part of each other's lives. Sometimes Dominic saw Rory getting undressed for bed or shower and sometimes he looked and he knew that Rory saw him looking. And sometimes he could feel Rory looking at him. It made him nervous, but he still didn't look away.
"Let's go," Rory said finally.
They walked through the snow, Dominic's steps less secure than Rory's
"Fuck, it's cold, Dom. It's fucking freezing."
"I don't feel a thing."
"Yeah? Give me that bottle."
Dominic stood outside his house. "I don't want to go in yet."
"Come on," Rory said and Dominic followed him into his house, to his room where he could see his own room empty and dark.
I need another bottle, Rory thought. They kept drinking, this time sitting on Rory's bed and the music was on full blast. Rory was shivering and Dominic's swollen lips looked pale. Rory's jeans were wet from the snow and he took them off. Dominic stared and didn't even seem to care that he was just staring. Rory instructed Dominic to take his wet clothes off. He obeyed. Still cold, he went under a quilt and Dominic followed. They both took a long swig from the bottle. The liquid left a hot trail from the throat to the stomach and relaxed the whole body. Rory raised his hand and wiped Dominic's hair so that he could see the bruise that that Thompson bastard had given him. He caressed the skin on Dominic's forehead, cheek and lips. Dominic shivered.

It's the cold, they thought just before falling asleep. Soft snow flakes hit the window glass and started to form bigger flakes. The moon was full and casted shadows on the walls. And even when the temperature rose in the room, Rory and Dominic stayed close together all night long.
