Run
The black and narrow country road leads further away from the city. It is quiet and almost deserted. There are no street lights around here. The sky is dark as usually, stars and moon hidden by the thick layer on grey clouds. It might start raining again any minute now.
Fernando drives too fast, not slowing down for the curves and bumps on the road. He keeps his eyes on the road but his mind is elsewhere. Fernando doesn’t know how long he has been driving or really where he is. He just knows that he almost dialled the number. Then he ran out and started driving. Left his mobile on the kitchen table. The least he could do was not to call.
“It could be,” Sergio had said.
Fernando knew something inside Sergio broke when Fernando didn’t say anything.
He startles as he drives over a rabbit or maybe a big rat. Fernando can’t tell. He stops the car and turns the lights off. It is pitch black. He cannot see the endless lines of brick houses that all look exactly the same. The streets that made him get lost all the time when he moved here.
He is weak, Fernando knows that. He wishes he could tell Sergio how hard it is, but telling Sergio would make Fernando selfish. The least he can do is leave Sergio alone. To take it like a man. To carry the consequences of his choices.
They say life is what you make of it but Fernando’s feels out of his control. “As if I have a choice,” Fernando had said to Sergio when he asked not to forget.
“Be brave,” Sergio had said. What did it mean to be brave? Fernando had made his decision.
It was final because Fernando knows Sergio wouldn’t go back to where they had been. It doesn’t matter whether they both want it or not. It doesn’t matter their relationship was the most intense and emotional - crazy and insane - thing they had experienced because Fernando had made his choice and Sergio wasn’t a fool.
Fernando sits in the car for what feels like hours and maybe it is hours because finally it’s light. He gets out of the car and sees it was a rabbit. It didn’t start raining after all and Fernando drives home. He doesn’t look at his phone when he gets home, just goes straight to bed.
He has a feeling Sergio didn’t mean this when he told him to be brave.
