98 - XP?

I have a rather frustrating problem...I finally got back the disks containing the first 10 chapters of my novel the other day...only to find out that for some reason XP can't read 98 word files >.<

Anyone know a way around this? I've tried opening it with notepad and...the other application whatsit...but no joy...

Have you tried OpenOffice.org? It has pretty good backwards compatibility. I started using it when I decided to step up to something legal rather than constantly pirating the newest versions of M$ Office.
