I've been wanting to go back to Taiwan for years now, and there's no better time than right after college. Problem is, I want to be doing something more than vacationing

I've heard that they don't offer adequate training and pay far less than competitors. Did you ever feel this way/do you have any ideas why people would think so?
no, I definitely felt adequately trained. I mean, perhaps there is only so much you can learn about teaching methods without going to school for an actual teaching certificate/degree. but they give tons of training.
I've looked around at other chain schools and the pay is comparable. I think some of the schools that pay more, you have to make your own lessons and have office hours. I do neither. they also have guaranteed hours which is nice. I know one guy that left and got hired at another school making more... but they only gave him 4 hours a week.
so you do have a bachelor's degree then? because that is helpful. most companies require that you do. also, do you have taiwanese citizenship? that would put you in another category compared to everybody else.
i attempted to apply for a job for 3 months. didn't work out. most of them wanted me to sign a contract for a year or more.
unfortunately i can't help you with any companies, but a quick google search will bring up many of the big names. can you read mandarin? you can try all the 人力銀行 online, just search for that term on google.
What is your ultimate purpose for going back to Taiwan? To gain work experience? To make money? To learn 'advanced' Taiwanese? To learn more Mandarin? Sounds like you have a few things in mind, so you may want to clarify your goals first.
Repeating what judes said, it'll be hard getting job just for 3 months (not to mention an apartment). If you want to work, you should be prepared to commit to at least a year. Three months is not much time at all, and a year will go by pretty quickly. There's a lot you can do with that time

A lot of it is a "reconnecting with my roots" thing. And yeah, from reading a few things, it seems my Asian looks + severely compromised Mandarin is actually going to be a huge disadvantage.
As with many post-grads (and I guess this is partially why I've heard pretty bad things about the companies you mentioned), the teaching-English idea was kind of for lack of any other reason/ability to be abroad in a way that contributes to society. Your comment was VERY helpful though and I'll definitely be looking into some of these things-- Thanks!
Reconnecting with your roots is commendable. You'll want more than 3 months, for sure. ;) While I'm on a roll, I may as well add more info. I taught English in Taipei for 3 years, 2003-6. I have dual Taiwanese-American citizenship. Went back to scope out the employment scene during my college senior year spring break in February, found that every potential employer was more interested in my white boyfriend than me. Got so frustrated in those short 8 days, I was crying in public
