To Travis:
I'm sorry. I know this is technically late, but I didn't want to post this until you'd be able to read it... It's small, kind of lame, and you'll get your "big gift" next week. I hope it's okay though.
Happy belated birthday!

Happy Birthday to Me
James opened one of his brown eyes, hearing a small tap against his window. He laid on his side, waiting to see if it was just the wind, when another tap was made. Silently, he slid off his bed and crept towards his bedroom window. His right hand tightly gripping his katana, he opened the window and looked down to see...
“Clerry?” he hissed. “What are you doing here?”
Cleris smiled up at him, giving him a small wave. “Well, how else was I supposed to wish you a happy birthday?” she asked, giggling quietly under her breath.
He merely rolled his eyes before putting his katana back behind his dresser and pulled out the rope ladder he made, so she wouldn’t have to cast Aero every time she wanted to visit him, and tossed it over the side, holding the top as usual.
Her smile seemed to grow as she took a step back to let the ladder land, and she picked up a wrapped parcel before slowly climbing up, not wanting to get tangled up or drop his present.
The dark-haired boy sighed when she was a little over halfway there. “If I knew it was going to take you this long, I’d have come down and carried you up,” he sarcastically commented.
“Oh, shut up, I came all this way to see you. The least you can do is pretend to be happy to see me,” she huffed before reaching the top. However, she gave him a faint smile as she slid down from the windowsill and stood before him, holding out the wrapped parcel for him.
“Happy birthday, James.”
James Fair stared at her curiously as he took the box, giving it a small shake, trying to gauge her reaction more than the actual sound. Yet, Cleris stood there perfectly still, smiling. Then again, he could get very used to Cleris in his room late at night smiling, but that was for another time. She folded her hands behind her back, rocking on her heels once as she waited patiently for him to open the present. He quickly tore through the packaging and opened the box to find a tubberware filled with brownies and a new dagger.
“You made me brownies?” he asked, surprised.
She nodded with a shy smile. “Well...I know you like them, so yeah, I found an old recipe that Mom had and decided to make them.”
He winced at that. From all the stories he had heard from his father, Aerith Gainsborough may have been kindest woman on the planet but certainly not the best chef. James just prayed her daughter was better. Setting the box down on his desk, he pulled out the dagger, staring at it. It was very worn, the once shiny deep blue sheath covered in scratches. The hilt was made of possibly old steel, and was in the shape of a wolf sitting. Curious, he pulled it out of its sheath, noticing how dull the blade was. James already owned much better knives and swords, but he saw the hopeful look in Cleris’ blue eyes.
“I...know it’s not much, but...it reminded me of you,” Cleris began, and James raised an eyebrow, waiting to hear her explanation. “That blue...” she softly began, gently tapping the sheath with a finger, “...is the same shade as your eyes... And I know it’s pretty worn, and it’s not as good as your other knives, but...I thought it must have seen some battles in its time... It had to...protect someone...” There was a pause as James looked at her intently, and Cleris smiled shyly. “And, well...I do call you, ‘bodyguard’ for a reason...” She paused again, letting out a soft, nervous chuckle, and at that, James gave her a faint smile. “And there’s...the wolf on the hilt, and you...you’ve always reminded me of a wolf...”
At that, James gently reached over with one hand and rubbed his thumb across her cheek, making the young girl blush. She did put a lot of thought into his gift; the least he could do was say thank you... And hell, it WAS his birthday, after all... He might as well have SOME fun...
“Thank you,” he murmured with his faint smile still there. She almost seemed memorized by his gaze as his hand slid slightly lower to cup her cheek, and he leaned down, kissing her tenderly. James was surprised when she didn’t tense or belt him, but she returned it, wrapping her arms around his neck. Perhaps she was finally falling for him as much as he had.
Feeling bold, he gently licked her lips, almost sucking on the bottom one. There was a gasp of surprise, and James didn’t hesitate to slip into her open mouth. A soft moan came from her, and James snaked his other hand around to her to small of her back and pulled her closer. He held the kiss a moment longer before slowly pulling back. Her cheeks were as red as cherries, a shy yet passionate look to her eyes. He smirked faintly, his blue eyes warm and soft as he stroked her cheek again. For a moment, they stood there silently, until Cleris snapped out of her daze.
“Heh, um, well, I...guess I should go,” she almost stammered, smiling shyly, and she turned to leave, when James gently grabbed her arm, being all too careful not to hurt her.
“Or...you could stay here for the night, like I did with you,” he offered, his voice soft, not pleading but still asking.
She looked back to him, her blush quickly returning, pointing at him. “Just for tonight,” she told him, and he nodded, a bit of a wolfish grin forming on his face as he followed her to bed, placing the dagger on the night stand before wrapping his arms around her.
‘She said yes!’ he thought, still smirking as he held her close. Now, she was more relaxed with him, her own arms wrapped around him and resting her head on him, almost nuzzling him.
“Happy birthday, James,” she mumbled into his chest, shutting her eyes as she snuggled against him, trying to fall asleep.
He looked down at her sleeping form and gently stroked her hair. All arrogance was gone as he gently held her, a smile appearing on his face again. Yeah, for boyish reasons, he had been trying to get her into his bed for years, ever since she first started her sophomore year, but honestly, this is what he wanted. James kissed her forehead, gently nuzzling her before resting his chin on top of her head.
‘Oh yeah,’ he thought as sleep started to claim his body, ‘Happy birthday to ME!'
