This country, while positing itself as one of the most "free" and "diverse," always seems to be the most paranoid and xenophobic. Anything that isn't conforming, that doesn't qualify the lowest common denominator, and challenges people is considered frightening and evil. Yes, all of this hubbub lately is terrifying, but I think one thing to keep in mind is that the reason people are acting this way is because they are terrified of us. There is nothing more frightening than an image which would turn out to be a mirror.
I was about to say the same thing. The reason why these people are so afraid is because they can sense what's coming. There will be a change. There already is a change. Recent years have shown a larger number of pro-gay television shows, movies, and plays, but now we are experiencing the backlash. These people are afraid to give us what we all deserve. Equality.
Hell, change is scary for everyone. If suddenly, tomorrow, we were to be given complete equality and were to be treated as full-fledged human beings by everyone - wouldn't that be scary at first? Sure, it's what we want, but we're not expecting it just yet. The thought of suddenly not being paraiahs is a bit daunting.
I forgot to mention in my last comment, that I've been contemplating our society's standards quite a bit myself. It really is tragic how much the beliefs of someone else have been effecting me lately, and making me question my own morals, my own rightiousness. Maybe the hatred of the masses is why I hide who I am. Maybe it's why I embrace it. Slowly, the beliefs are infiltrating into my own thoughts, and that scares me. It makes me wonder if I will eventually hate myself, hate what I am, or hate someone else.
What our society is doing, is breeding fear, breeding hatred, and breeding insecurity.
