Chapter 9

I woke up feeling like I had been brutally beaten yesterday. I knew I was fine, but my body just felt heavy. I couldn’t stop the groan as I sat up. I knew the first thing I had to do was talk with Hangeng. It seemed easier than trying to talk with Wookie right now. I quickly dressed and headed towards Zhoumi and Hangeng’s room.

I ran into Zhoumi as I was coming around the corner. Literally, I ran into his back and fell. I was staring at the ceiling trying to watch the little stars flying around.

Zhoumi’s face appeared amongst the stars. “Yesung, oh my god, are you alright?”

Apparently, I was still kind of out of it because all I could do was giggle and tell him he was sparkly. His eyes narrowed at that and he helped me up. That was enough to snap me out of it. I groaned and put my head in my hands “God Zhoumi, do you normally just stand around in the hallways?”

“Sorry. I was looking through my bag to make sure I didn’t forget something.” He held up his half open bag as proof.

I just nodded. “It’s cool. It’s just been a while since I had a klutzy moment and I don’t miss them. Anyway, since you’re here I wanted to ask you where Hangeng was.”

He looked surprised. “He already left.”

“He already left?” I knew he wasn’t lying, he had no need to. “Left to where?”

Zhoumi thought for a second. “I think he went on ahead to class. He wasn’t very talkative last night.”

I just nodded, knowing exactly why he was like that. “Ah. I’ll just head over to the class now then. I want to talk to him.”

I started walking off when Zhoumi’s hand on my arm stopped. “Are you sure you should be trying to talk to him?”

I looked at him puzzled “Why shouldn’t I?”

He just shook his head and left. I was puzzled, why should I not talk with him? I had things I needed to clear up. I grabbed a quick breakfast, and then rushed over to my first class hoping to talk with Hangeng. I arrived with 20 minutes to spare and he wasn’t there. Zhoumi wasn’t either, but he never gets here early. He likes to lollygag before class. I was at a loss at what to do. I didn’t want to go looking for him because I had no idea where he could be.

So I decided to just wait and see if he’d show up. It was like 3 minutes before class when he slipped in. Not even a couple seconds after him the teacher came in and started the lesson.

I had no choice but to suffer through the class. I had planned on catching him afterwards, but as soon as the bell rang, he was out of the class. I hurried out the door to look for him and he was nowhere in sight.

I rushed to the next class, figuring he headed there. Again he wasn’t there until right before the bell. Not once did he turn to look at me, but I had a feeling it was me he was avoiding. That was the pattern for the classes before lunch. I gave up thinking I could corner him at lunch.

The bell rang for lunch and yet again, he rushed out like the class was on fire. I made my way to the lunch room thinking of what to say and how to corner him. I got my lunch and dodged people, and made my way to my table. First thing I saw was no Hangeng. Next thing was Heechul looking kind of peeved.

As soon as I sat down, Heechul whipped around to me and slammed his hand on the table. “Where is China Man?” he was demanding.

Startled, I said “I don’t know. I was hoping to talk to him at lunch but he’s not here.”

Heechul narrowed his eyes at that. “Well what did you do to him? He said he was going to let me have some of his lunch.”

“What did I do? Why would I have done anything and I’m sure you can get your own lunch.”

Heechul got a superior look. “Well, I figured if you were looking for him to talk, then you had to have done something. Also I know I am capable of getting my own lunch but why would I want to when I have someone else more than willing to do it for me?” He had the nerve to look pleased with that.

“That is a horrible reason for both of what I asked. I don’t get why he talks with you. You treat him like a slave or a toy.” I stated.

Heechul laughed. “I might treat him like a toy but he lets me. Besides, I talk with him too. Did you know he was chosen to be a main dancer for the recitals coming up? He must be pretty amazing for that to happen since most guys that have been here since 10th grade barely make it in.” He snickered.

I felt my eye doing that twitch again. “How do you know that? I haven’t heard about it before.”

Heechul leaned toward me. “He told me all this after he was chosen. He has told me a great many things.” Then he turned and started up a conversation with Leeteuk.

I was starting to get mad again. ‘He will tell all this to someone who treats him like a slave but not to me. I mean I know why he’s avoiding me now but this happened before yesterday.’ I just didn’t get it. I spent the rest of lunch just staring at the table trying to figure out why.

I finally got fed up with all this bullshit. ‘I am going to find out what’s going on and I’m going to find out today.’ I knew better than to ask from Heechul but I knew Zhoumi would know and he had lunch next. I decided to just skip my next class and corner Zhoumi. I figured he would be easier to get information out of anyway.

As everyone was making their way back to classes I went and sat in corner waiting for the next lunch group.

About 5 minutes later I saw Zhoumi and his group converge on our usual table.

I waited a minute, just watching them. It wasn’t very often I see them out of the dorms. Sungmin and Shindong were chatting away about something. Must have been funny because Shindong was laughing and Sungmin’s arms were flailing.

The next little group had my blood boiling. Donghae and Eunhyuk were sitting next to each other, not really touching but near each other. To people who didn’t know they had something going on, they just seemed close friends. Having seen what I had seen I could see little signs that they were more. Glances that lingered too long, a brush of the hand or a random giggle pointed toward something more. How no one else saw it was beyond me.

I forced my eyes away from them and sought out Zhoumi. He was sitting near Sungmin and Shindong laughing with them. Siwon was nowhere to be found. My bet was that he was studying. I got up and made my way to the table.

As I drew near their table they stopped talking and turned to look at me. As I got to the table, Sungmin spoke up. “Yesung? Don’t you have class now?”

He did look confused, but I walked over to Zhoumi and put my hand on his shoulder. “Actually I just really needed to talk to Zhoumi today and I thought it would be easier to talk now.” I smiled at Zhoumi.

Zhoumi looked confused “Huh?”

I grabbed him and towed him toward an empty table. I could feel the eyes of the others as we walked away. He sat down and walked to sit in front of him. I got right to the point. “Ok. I want to know what’s up with Hangeng. I have been trying to talk to him since he got here, but nothing. I understood why at first. He was in a new school with new people, but now he’s talking with Heechul. I hear from Kibum that he and the other dancers are great friends. I hear he gets along fine with everybody, but not me. Why will he not talk to me?”

Apparently, this is not what Zhoumi thought I would have talked about.

When I had got done with my ramble, he blurted out. “It’s because you hate him. He doesn’t want to talk to since you hate him.”

I was stunned. ‘I don’t hate him. How could I hate him, he never gave me a reason.’ I responded. “I don’t hate him.”

“You don’t?” Zhoumi sounded like he didn’t believe me. “Well if you don’t, why does he think you do?”

‘That is a good question.’ I had no idea how he could think I hate him. I sat back in stunned silence. “I don’t know.”

Zhoumi must believe me now because he lost the disbelieving look and had a thoughtful expression. “Well, he has been telling me that you have been glaring at him at random times when he hasn’t even done anything. You also seem to do everything to get rid of him. He has also told me all about the incident yesterday.”

I sat there in silence thinking of what he just told me. I remembered all those times where I had thought Hangeng didn’t notice but it was never him. It was always Kyuhyun I was mad at. I groaned and thumped my head on the table and mumbled “It was never him I was mad at. He just happened to be around when the actual person pissed me off. I did honestly resent him at first for taking up my time but even when he went off on his own I still didn’t get what I want so I had no right to resent him. So I stopped.”

I could hear Zhoumi shift around since my head was still on the table “You don’t hate him?”

“No.” I mumbled. “I’ve been trying to talk with him for a week. I have wanted to be his friend but he just blew me off.”  I groaned again. This is just stupid. All this time he thought I hated him. “The incident yesterday was in part true. I told you I resented him at first, but I did not get a chance to explain to him before he ran off.”

Zhoumi just sat there for a minute in silence. “Well, he truly believes you hate him. You’re going to have to admit everything and tell him everything to get him to believe you’re telling the truth. I’ve talked a lot with him. If you explain everything to him calmly he will come around.” The bell rang, signally the end of lunch. Zhoumi stood up saying “I won’t tell him this. It’s up to you to tell him all this. Just make sure you do it soon.” Zhoumi walked away without turning back.

I got up and followed him. We had the next class together. I got to class a little early. Hangeng yet again came in right on time. He looked taken back to see me. I guess since I skipped last class he thought I just left school period.

During class I couldn’t stop staring at his back thinking of what Zhoumi told me.
I was remembering all the times I went to meet him, right after having a confrontation with Ryeowook or Kyuhyun. I was sure I must have looked pissed cause I was, but at Kyuhyun. I tried to think how he would see it. He’d see me coming around a corner or door looking pissed with him not knowing about Kyuhyun and just seeing that. I silently groaned. Yeah, I can see how he would think I hate him. If it was him always looking pissed when he had to come get me, I’m pretty sure I would think he hated me too.

Those thoughts kept racing thru my head the rest of the classes. I stopped trying to catch him and just went to the classes. I watched him run off to dance practice.

I wondered if any of the dancers would tell Hangeng I talked to Zhoumi during his lunch.

Singing practice was mostly boring. We were either by ourselves or in groups for the recital coming up soon. I was, unfortunately, by myself. I had wanted to be in a group with Ryeowook but he’s with Kyuhyun. I remember being so mad at the teacher when she announced that.

I had gone to her after class to ask about that. She told the reason she didn’t put me with them like she had originally planned, was that she believed I had improved so much I deserved to have a solo. Sadly, when she said that, I couldn’t tell her to put me with the others. So I’m now alone in the class even more, practicing alone. I was so happy when class was over.

I was still thinking over what Zhoumi had told me that I didn’t even try to talk to Wookie. I knew I wouldn’t get a chance anyway. Him and Kyuhyun zoomed off faster than normal and I didn’t even care right then. If I would have thought about that, I would realize something was up with me. I headed back to the dorm without stopping by the dance studio knowing he was either going to wait for me to leave before he came out or go out a back way.

I wasn’t really expecting anything when I walked into the dorm, but an arm grabbed me as I was walking by the kitchen.

I was turned around before I had a chance to utter any sound. I came face to face with Kibum. He didn’t look upset or anything he just had a small smile on his lips. “Well played Yesung.” To say I was confused was putting it mildly.

“Well what?” Then it hit me. My mind has been so stuck on Hangeng I forgot I messed with Kibum this morning.

“I have been waiting, since I pulled the stunt with you, for you to do something.” He smirked and leaned against the wall. “I was starting to think you were too chicken to pull anything.” I was kind of stunned at that. Was he complimenting me or was he about to get on to me.

“Huh? Wait, are you actually saying that you wanted me to?”

“Yes. It was simple, yet effective. I only missed one class. Tell me how you convinced Siwon to not wake me up?” he was asking.

I felt much better knowing this. We used to play pranks on each other all the time. Lately though, we have stopped. So I was afraid if I retaliated he would be very mad about missing a class. “Actually, Siwon was easy. All I did was offered him my room when he wants to avoid Heechul. For that, he promised to keep the door unlocked and to not wake you up in morning.” I explained.

He just nodded then pushed away from the wall and patted me on shoulder saying “Just wanted to say great job. Don’t worry, I won’t do anything.” He walked off.

Confused and relieved, I headed up to my room to let my turtle out and to think about this stuff. I rushed into my room and slammed the door. Next thing I saw and heard was Siwon jumping and yelling from my desk. We stood staring at each other for many seconds as he caught his breath.

“Are you ok?” I asked. It’s not often I see him freaked out.

Siwon just nodded and sat back down.

I continued and said “Sorry I didn’t think to check if anyone was in here or I wouldn’t have busted in.”

He just turned and smiled saying “It’s ok. It’s my fault I didn’t call ahead or anything. The teacher surprised us with a test tomorrow so I needed to study and I only had a small window of time to escape Heechul.”

Thinking how Heechul must be right now, I decided I would stay in here as long as Siwon did. I also figured this would be a great chance to finish up some work. It was my room but I still felt the need to ask “Hey is it cool if I join you and do my homework too?”

Siwon just looked at me startled and nodded.

I went and got my work out. I put it all on the bed, got my turtle out and sat on the bed with all the stuff. I turned toward Siwon to see his amused look.

“What? He wanted out.”

Siwon just shook his head and went back to his work.

Mumbling, I petted the turtle’s head and started on my work. Everything was going smooth and silent. All you could hear was the scratching of the pencils and the turning of pages. I heard stomping steadily coming towards my door.

That was all the warning I had before Kangin burst in the door yelling. “Yesung, you have to help me! Sungmin wants me to go shopping with him and he’s blackmailing me!”

For the second time that night, Siwon yelled, jumped and lost his pencil. I think he was starting to regret coming in here. There was silence after that yell, with just me and Siwon staring at Kangin trying to catch his breath. Kangin looked startled to see Siwon, “What are you doing here, Siwon?”

I saw Siwon look at me, I could tell he didn’t want the real reason out so I answered for him. “I asked Siwon to help me with some work.”

Like I knew he would, he just accepted it, sat down next to me and picked up my turtle. “Please help me get out of this.” I just sighed to myself knowing this work wouldn’t get done until I helped him.

“How is he blackmailing you and why does he want you to go shopping with him?” I stressed the words because why anyone would want to take the complaining-prone Kangin was a mystery.

Kangin’s eyes flickered to Siwon and said “He’s using the information he learned about last week. You know, right?”

He must mean the shower thing. I honestly didn’t think it was that bad, but you wouldn’t be able to tell Kangin that.

Kangin continued. “He wants me to go with him an be his, I quote, ‘bag boy.’”

I looked at him as he said this and I could tell he was in a panic about it. I don’t see why he doesn’t just go with him. He might be able to bitch and moan enough to get Sungmin to not buy as much. I looked over at Siwon to see his shoulders shaking in silent laughter.

“Kangin just go with him this once. You might be able to convince him to not buy as much. If you ask nicely, Siwon might be willing to ask Heechul to hang out with him that day. That way Sungmin doesn’t have Heechul whispering into his ear to buy every pink thing he sees.”

Siwon threw me a look. I gave a pointed look back. He sighed and said “Don’t worry, Kangin. Just go with him and I’ll keep Heechul here.”

Kangin got an even more panicked look. “You didn’t hear me. I don’t want to go at all!”

I decided this called for playing dirty. “Kangin if you don’t go peacefully I will tell everyone about that.”

Kangin just stared at me “You wouldn’t.”

“I would, but only because this is not that bad. He could be asking you to do something worse. Just go, carry some bags, bitch and maybe he will finish faster so you’ll shut up.”
Kangin just glared at me and stormed out.

Siwon turned to me and asked “Do you think he is going to go?”

I nodded “Yeah, and I have a feeling he will be bitching the whole time.”

Siwon just chuckled and went back to his work.

We worked for another 2 hours, then Siwon excused himself back to his room. It was just me and my turtle now and I went and put him up. At some point, I came up with the idea of intercepting Hangeng on his way to class in the morning and making him listen to me.
I went to bed hoping that plan would not backfire and I would be able to surprise him enough to drag him away with minimum fuss.
