CHAPTER 4
I was so happy when that first boring class ended.
I walked over to Hangeng and Zhoumi. “Hangeng is in your Korean class, right?” I asked Zhoumi.
“Yeah, so if it’s cool I’ll just take him myself and let you go ahead to English.” He said, already pointing Hangeng out the door.
“Don’t worry. Our class is near your English class, so I’ll just bring him over afterwards and you can take over from there.” With that, they left.
I hurried over to English class. I made it right as the bell rang.
“So, did you have a good morning?” Kibum asked as I sat next him and turned to glare at him.
“You know, you are such an asshole, but I want to thank you for letting me wake up early.”
He just chuckled and said “Anytime.”
I snorted and got my notes out. “Tell me again why you’re in here cause I know for a fact you can speak and read English just fine.”
He just said “It’s an easy A.” He got his own books out.
“Whatever.” was the last thing I was able to say before the teacher started class.
Not only did English go by super slow but the teacher decided to keep us a little later.
By the time we were dismissed from class, Zhoumi had already brought Hangeng by and left. I found him leaning on the wall near the door. “We need to hurry. Our next class is on the other side of campus.” I said grabbing him as I hurried by.
Getting held late seemed to be a reoccurring theme. We barely made it to our next two classes as well.
I really was starting to think he just didn’t like me, for every time I tried to talk to him he would just either nod or answer in 2 to 3 words. So I started to only try to talk to him when I needed to.
So let’s just say those 2 classes were tedious and I was glad it was lunch time.
We made it to the cafeteria in good time and I saw Hangeng looking around in awe. I could understand that because the room was huge and packed with students. I noticed that a lot of the girls were whispering and pointing toward him but since he was with me they actually didn’t approach.
I snickered remembering why most of the girls avoid me. ‘It was their fault for interrupting a serious conversation between Kibum and me. I didn’t mean to yell at them or throw my water. It was just a really bad day.’
As we got our food, I pointed near the back where a small group of guys were.
Hangeng nodded and headed over there ahead of me. As we neared the table, I heard Heechul and Kangin arguing.
I groaned. ‘Heechul seems like he is his normal mood. Maybe I should sit with Hangeng somewhere else.’ It’s not always good to introduce new people to Heechul when he’s in a mood like this.
It was too late. Hangeng already reached the table. The table got quiet as Hangeng stood there.
I hurried over and said “Guys, this is Hangeng, the transfer student from China.” I turned toward Hangeng. “You already know Kangin, but the other two are Kim Heechul,” I pointed to Heechul. He looked Hangeng up and down, but didn’t say anything. “And Park Jungsu, but he goes by Leeteuk, so just call him that.”
Leeteuk got up and bowed. “Hello, I heard from Zhoumi you got settled in nicely.”
Hangeng looked a little startled.
“Oh Leeteuk is our dorm’s R.A” I explained quickly.
Hangeng just nodded like he understood. I could feel my eye twitch. It seems to be a new habit I picked up recently.
“What? Does he not speak?” Heechul asked.
“No, he can speak Korean.” I told him.
Heechul turned toward Hangeng. “Then why isn’t he speaking?”
I sighed. “I don’t know. Why are you asking me? Ask him.”
Heechul leaned over the table and got into Hangeng’s face. “Hey, why don’t you speak?”
“Heechul, maybe he doesn’t want to.” Leeteuk tried to get him to sit back down.
“No, I want to know.” Heechul got a little closer “Hey, China man, you speak right?”
Hangeng nodded.
“No. Don’t nod. Reply with spoken word. Do you speak at all?” Heechul demanded.
Hangeng sort of paled and finally replied “Yes, I can speak Korean and, yes I do speak.”
I thought it was a fucking miracle that he actually spoke.
“Good, because I don’t let people sit here with me if they don’t speak. So, from now on if you see me, you better speak.” Heechul said, leaning back in his chair.
Hangeng started to nod again but apparently thought better of it and said “Okay.”
We took that as our cue to eat. I was hoping lunch would hurry and pass. Luck was not on my side.
All throughout the lunch period, Heechul was picking on Hangeng for his accent or how he would stutter.
Leeteuk was trying to get Heechul to leave the guy alone so he could eat in peace, but it seemed like Heechul was in a good mood. It was a rare thing indeed.
I didn’t think I was being obvious with the glare I was sending them but apparently Kangin caught on. He whispered to me, “Hey, why are you glaring at the new kid and Heechul?”
I turned to him sharply. “Shh. I’m just upset that I’ve been trying to get Hangeng to talk to me since yesterday but it’s like pulling teeth, but Heechul can just demand it and Hangeng will just talk to him.” I whispered back.
“Well, to be honest, Heechul is scary if you don’t listen to him. He’ll probably start talking to more people after a few days.” Kangin tried to placate me.
“Yeah, you may be right.” I said back.
The bell finally rang for lunch to be over.
I quickly grabbed Hangeng, saying I didn’t want to be late for our next class.
Hangeng was still quiet during the next three classes. He would respond when talked to by either me or the teacher, but nothing beyond that.
It was time for our department classes.
I asked him which class he had now. I was kind of hoping he wouldn’t be in singing. That way I could try to talk with Ryeowook some today.
“Dance.” Another one word response
“Great. You’re on the way to my singing class.” I started walking toward the department buildings. When he started speaking next, I was kind of startled.
“By the way, uumm…”
I stopped and turned at that and saw him looking at the ground or at the trees. Just anywhere but my face.
“You don’t have to keep helping me after today. I’m sure I can find everything now.”
That was the longest I’ve heard him speak. Well, at least when he was talking to me. I couldn’t help but think he had a great voice. “No. I promised I would help for a couple weeks to make sure you get settled in and I’m going to keep that promise. Don’t worry; you are not taking up my time or anything. Kyuhyun was right when he said I didn’t really have anything to do in my spare time anyway.” I turned toward him, flashing what I hoped was a confident smile. “Okay. Well your dance classes meet in this building here. I’ve never really been in here, so I would get you more lost then if you went in by yourself. Besides, I’m going to be late for my class. Are you okay going in by yourself?”
He just nodded and started for the door.
“Oh. Hey, I’ll meet you right here, okay? Our classes end around the same time.”
He looked like he wanted to refuse, but he just nodded again and walked in.
I stood there for a minute, then turned and jogged to the other building. I barely made it to that class in time. I didn’t have time to talk with Ryeowook before the lesson began.
All throughout class, I had to see Kyuhyun continuously leaning to whisper in his ear and see Ryeowook either giggle at what he said or turn and whisper back.
Every time he did that, Kyuhyun would throw a glance towards me, knowing I would be looking and smirk.
I wanted so bad to say or do something, but I knew it wasn’t the time and I that I had to wait for this weekend to put the plan in action. So I just sat there in class not really paying attention, glaring at Kyuhyun.
When class finally ended, I raced to Ryeowook. “Hey. Wookie, wait up.”
He stopped and turned toward me, smiling. God, how I loved seeing his smile. “Yes, Yesung?”
“Oh, I just wanted to ask if you were doing anything later tonight. I have to run by the dance department to get Hangeng, but when we get back to the dorm, do you want to hang?” I managed to get out in a rush.
His face kind of fell then, and my heart sank. “Oh you should have asked earlier. Kyuhyun is coming over to help me and Henry with our homework tonight and then watch a movie.” He did really look sorry for that, but I snuck a glance at Kyuhyun and he just looked smug. I wanted to kick that bastard.
“That’s cool. I’ll just hang with Kibum or Kangin then.”
“I mean, if you want, you can join us. I’m sure Henry won’t mind.” I looked at Kyuhyun again and he just raised his eyebrow.
“No, I’m fine. I’d be lost with the homework, and I’m not in the mood for a movie. You all have fun.” I said, hurrying out towards the dance classes.
I saw Hangeng standing there waiting for me and I could help but kind of glare at him. ‘All of this is your fault. If I didn’t have to help you, I would have been able to ask Wookie about hanging out earlier in one of the classes.’ I knew I was being unfair towards Hangeng but at that moment I didn’t really care.
I managed to actually stop glaring at him by the time I got to him. I hoped he hadn’t seen that. “Come on; let’s go ahead to the dorm before the kitchen is full.”
I noticed he had showered after his class and he hadn’t dried his hair completely, so it was hanging into his eyes. I had to make myself turn away.
That’s when his voice stopped me “Umm, actually I was wondering if there was a place I could practice dance after hours?”
I turned toward him. His accent was deep and it sounded great with no stuttering, even if I had to listen hard to get all that he was saying.
“As a matter of fact, there is. I heard Kibum talking about how Donghae would go over to the back of the dance building and use one of the unlocked rooms.”
He looked at me. “Could you show me where it is? I’d like to practice more.”
Be still my heart, he was actually talking to me. For that bit alone, I wanted to help him. “Sure. Do you want me to wait with you or will you be fine?”
“I’ll be fine. I remember where the dorm is and I’ll be going straight to the dorm after I practice some more.”
“Okay, it’s this way.” I said, leading him toward the back. I showed him where it was and he went right in. As I was walking back toward the dorm, I realized his tone with talking to me is different than when he was talking to Heechul or Zhoumi. It was colder and more aloof. I didn’t know what to make of it as I entered the dorm.
I decided to go up to Kibum and Siwon’s room instead of mine because I was sure Kangin would have been up to mine soon to rant about Sungmin again and I just didn’t want to deal with it right then.
I knocked and entered Kibum’s room to see Heechul and Siwon in a lip lock to put a married couple to shame.
“Geez, couldn’t y’all have warned a person first?” I said, shielding my eyes.
Heechul broke the kiss, then said, “Well, Yesung, when you just barge into a room, expect to see thing you don’t want to see.”
I just looked at him. “Why aren’t you two in your room, Heechul? Kyuhyun is with Ryeowook, so you would have the room to yourself.”
Heechul just grinned and started running his fingers through Siwon’s close-cropped hair. “Siwon said he had homework and that he was staying in his room tonight. So, naturally, I came to help him with his homework.”
I looked to Heechul sitting in his lap to the closed books next to him and gave a look to Siwon. “Naturally, you need help.” He just blushed and looked away.
I turned to find Kibum with his back to the boys, his headphones on doing his work.
I sat next to him. He turned and saw me, then turned to see that Heechul and Siwon were now just simply talking. He took off his headphones. “Do you need anything?”
“Nah, I just wanted company other than Kangin and thought I could come talk with you about the ‘thing’ we were talking about last night. Oh, by the way, I love how you can ignore them.”
Kibum just smirked and looked over at them. “Hey, love birds. Yesung and I need to talk. How about going to Heechul’s empty room for a bit?” Kibum told them.
Siwon gave us a pleading look as Heechul dragged Siwon out.
“Now where were we last night?”
We talked and planned for a couple hours, then I headed to bed with a smile on my face just thinking of Kyuhyun’s scream of anguish when he discovers what we are going to do. Last thing I did before bed was make sure my alarm was like it’s supposed to be. Then I slept.
