#001 - FreeFall
Leeteuk was sitting in his room reading over the script for tomorrow's drama project when he heard a soft knock on his door.
“Come in.” Leeteuk said just loud enough to be heard.
Kangin opened the door and popped his head in saying, “Teukie, do you mind if we can practice our project? I’m still kind of nervous about it.” He flashed Leeteuk his boyish grin, which in the past could get him to agree to practically anything.
Leeteuk felt himself responding to the smile again. “Sure. I was just going through it now, anyway.”
Kangin stepped into the room. “Do you want to practice in here? Or do you want to go to the common room or something?”
Kangin started fidgeting, looking around the room. “I would say my room, but I left Sungmin with Zhoumi and Heechul spazzing over something.”
Leeteuk felt his chest tighten at Sungmin’s name. “Ah, yes, Sungmin. How is that going? And we might as well just stay in here.” Leeteuk felt a twinge of the old jealousy.
Leeteuk watched as Kangin sat in the chair next to the bed. He had a soft smile on his face. Leeteuk hasn’t seen that smile in years.
Kangin started talking “It's going good with Sungmin. I know it's only been a week, but it's like we are still the same as before... just with more stuff we can do. He still drives me insane with his shopping habits. I have been told by Siwon and Hangeng that it's normal to feel that way. Only now when he comes back from shopping, I don’t run and hide.”
Kangin pulled his script out, preparing to start when Leeteuk cut in. “If, two years ago, I hadn’t freaked about what we were doing and how we could have been viewed, where do you think we would be right now?”
Kangin looked at him startled. “What?”
Leeteuk just sighed. “Never mind. Forget I mentioned it. I know we promised to never talk about it..”He started flipping through his script when he heard Kangin speak up.
“If it was a perfect world, we would have not cared about how we were viewed. We'd still be rooming together and we would still be together.”
Leeteuk looked back up at Kangin to see him looking at him with a faraway look.
He continued. “But this world isn’t perfect. We might have been able to keep it hidden for a while and then come out like a lot of the others did. But think about it... We have changed so much these two years. You became a responsible resident adviser. I became someone who takes stupid risks, drinks a lot and gets into fights. How long do you think we could have made it work? Personally, I think we ended on a good note. We had a chance to become even better friends now. I wouldn’t change it for anything and if you think about it, you would know I’m right.”
Leeteuk sat listening to Kangin and, in his head, he knew all this was true. It's just that his heart keeps telling him he made a stupid mistake.
Leeteuk replied. “I know all that you said is true in my head, but it's my heart that’s having trouble changing. I guess I never thought you would find someone else. Like I was waiting for you to come back and make the first move.” Leeteuk was baring a lot of himself and he just prayed this wouldn’t break the friendship they had.
Kangin moved and sat next to Leeteuk on the bed. “Teukie, look at me.”
Leeteuk looked up from the floor.
“I honestly was considering it. After all the other guys were coming out and admitting they were gay, I was really thinking we would have a shot then. That was about when Sungmin was put in my room. Then, slowly over time, most of my thoughts were taken up by him. Mostly from him driving me insane, but thinking about it now, I realized I fell for him then. I just couldn’t recognize the signs. That’s also when I started thinking of you as a good friend. When it comes to Sungmin, you know those rides where you freefall to the ground and it's just rushing up on you at once? That’s how it was with him. Like I freefell into love with him.”
Kangin finished speaking and just looked at Leeteuk, waiting for a response.
Leeteuk felt his throat start feeling like it was closing and he felt moisture in his eyes. He quickly blinked them away. He would not cry over the truth, but it still hurt.
Leeteuk finally spoke up. “Thinking about it, I’m sure I will come to fully believe what you said. I think if we had tried to make it work, we would have started to hate each other. I rather feel like this now and know I will get over it, than to hate you.” Leeteuk offered a small smile.
Kangin returned it. “Hell, the only thing you might need is just someone else to get your mind off me.”
Leeteuk looked dubious at that. “I don’t think tha-”
Kangin cut him off. “You know, Zhoumi is free.” He had the mischievous smile that used to always make Leeteuk’s heart flutter. It still did, but now that he was more aware, he noticed it wasn’t like it used to be.
Leeteuk felt himself smile back. “I don’t think me and Zhoumi would hit it off enough to go anywhere.”
Kangin clapped him on the back. “That just means we will have to try elsewhere. Now, are we ok?”
Leeteuk knew he wasn’t yet but he also knew he will be. So he felt good saying: “Yes. We are ok and, soon, I will be even better.” He smiled at Kangin.
“Good, now let's practice this damn thing so we don’t fail.” Kangin said, standing up and getting ready to say the lines.
‘Yes’ Leeteuk thought. ‘Soon I’ll be better.’
