"I'll get it," Joshua Crane called. He was already heading to the kitchen, but turned towards the door instead. When he opened it, his lip curled. "Oh. It's you."

"I have a name." Dalia stared a moment, annoyed, but didn't argue more like she usually might have. "Is your father here?"

"It depends," he replied, leaning on the door frame. "If this is another witch hun, he's been here all day and all night for weeks. If not..."

"Witch hunt?" Dalia raised a brow. "I'm here...on family business. Not anything work-related."

He led the way up to the main floor, then up the staircase to his study. The portraits remained on the wall, but now they flanked an unusual artwork. A pane of rippled glass, clear save for three distinct multicolored strands, hung prominently over his desk.

Taking his seat, he gestured for her to sit. "Your questions?"

"How--does it work? I just found out that I have it. Apparently my parents have known about it...but my mother didn't want to tell me." She sighed. "I talked to my dad about it...He didn't know a whole lot, other than the fact that it increases your senses, your healing rate...I heard from...someone else...that it affects each person who has it in a different way. Like my dad's healing rate is significantly higher than other people with the gene, probably. My dad said you've done research on it..."

"You have it?" He stared at her for a long moment. "I wonder why you say that. I know my Duela does, but where would you have come across that information?"

"A friend of mine has it," Dalia said carefully. "She observed traits in me--that my parents had also observed when I was growing up. I--don't have concrete scientific proof, but..." Dalia shrugged. "My dad would certainly know about what it's like to have it. So would my friend."

Crane leaned into the kitchen, murmuring a few words before retreating to the basement. Shortly afterward, Joshua appeared with a plateful of food.

He proceeded to slouch onto the couch, balancing the plate on his knees as he ate. "So. Was he any help?"

"I think so," Dalia shrugged, glancing at the food on the plate.

Oblivious, Joshua kept eating. "What did you say about Helena?"

"Why does it matter to you?" Dalia thought she'd seen them together briefly at the library event...but that had been ages ago and everyone mingled with everyone else at those events. But this...if Helena was involved--or even just friends--with Joshua....Well, she was smart enough to know the potential consequences. Still, Dalia couldn't help being concerned.
