CHARACTER
NAME: Justin Hammer
CANON SOURCE: Marvel/Iron Man filmverse

TIMELINE: Just after his arrest.
CANON ABILITIES: Being a greedy douchebag with Tony Stark penis envy, really. He can make weapons, but HammerTech pales in comparison to StarkTech. He does have copious shady resources and friends in high places, but poor planning skills. Also, surprisingly, he can cut a rug.

PERSONALITY: Justin Hammer is, at first sight, not nearly as threatening as his name might imply. One may call him spineless, and they would more or less be correct. Justin will back down under any big opposition, and then more than likely turn around and suck up to those that have stolen what little spotlight he may have had from him. He is completely obsequious to those who would fund or help him in any way or just generally have more power than he does. In spite of that, however, he will harbor resentment for anyone who steps on him too hard or doesn’t take him seriously. You can cross him once with relative safety, but don’t push your luck.

This leads to Hammer’s other side. Though he is a second rate physicist and inventor, he is an extremely shrewd businessman and a generally conniving individual. Those who don’t happen to be paying him and do piss him off are likely to find themselves in hot water relatively quickly. You aren’t of much use to him if you can’t give him what he wants, and he has no problem with booting you violently out of the picture, so long as he can do it without being caught. Being both spineless and conniving means he has multiple goons that do this for him. Hammer also has a great team of consultants and emissaries to take care of his underhanded business deals in person. He hates to get his hands dirty, at least publicly.

Since Justin is so good at hiding his tracks, his public persona displays a bumbling, self absorbed man with a sense of humor that really only appeals to himself. He is really like this, but without his more menacing aspects, it doesn’t help with his image of failure and secondhand workmanship. He can silence entire crowds with bad jokes, tastelessly try and bring a conversation into focus on him, no matter how irrelevant, and is far from a smooth operator in his dating life. While some of these traits have the possibility of being charming, Justin only succeeds in making them seem obnoxious.

If something positive can be said about Hammer besides the fact that he can provide a good unintentional laugh, he is a patriot of the United States, or at least professes to be. He joined the weapons business to defend the interests of America, but unfortunately he lacks the genuine skill to effectively do so. It may be arguable that his intentions are not so pure, and that his goal is to merely cement a place for himself in history as a great defender of the States, but the ambition is not particularly unadvisable, merely the means by which he tries to progress.

CANON HISTORY: We aren’t told a great deal about Hammer’s life before he appears in the movie. What we can infer is that he is a long time admirer of Howard Stark, and has tried to be a defense dealer in his image. We can also see that in comparison to the fruit of the Stark loins, he doesn’t do a good job of it. He tries to imitate most of Tony Stark’s products, but they are too advanced for his software and technology, especially the Iron Man suit.

Tony’s decision to drop out of the weapons race, however, is responsible for Hammer’s sudden rise in productivity. Now that Stark Industries no longer manufactures weapons, the US government turns to him for their arms resources. He is not simply content with this, however, as while he admires Howard Stark, Justin hates Tony with a passion. He is successful in everything Hammer is not: producing quality products, innovating whole industries, making money, earning respect, and getting laid. Rather than try and elevate himself to these levels honestly, Justin wants to destroy Tony’s prosperity so he can truly be number one both in his lifetime and the history books.

Hammer thinks he gets a lucky break in this department when he sees Ivan Vanko has both created an arc reactor and also has a vendetta against Tony. Once the ex-Soviet physicist is jailed in Monaco, Hammer uses his less scrupulous resources to have Vanko busted out and his death faked. He then has him secretly whisked away to his factory in Queens, New York in order to upgrade the HammerTech suits that were only a failure with Justin’s own design. With this, he wants to publicly put the Iron Man armor to shame at the Stark Expo.

Unfortunately for Hammer, Vanko had his own plans from the start. He simply used Hammer’s offered resources to make drones he could fully control from afar. Hammer considers getting rid of Vanko, but is stopped when the Army acquires the 2.0 model armor after Rhodey takes it from Tony. Hammer is more than happy to slap modifications onto the stolen armor and claim it as his own, creating the War Machine armor with heavy duty arms specifications.

The unveiling at the Expo is where things fall apart for Hammer. Vanko puts his plan into action, unleashing the drones on the crowd and controlling Rhodey’s armor. While Iron Man takes over the situation, Justin and his tech team fail miserably at trying to beat out Vanko’s control programs. After being questioned by Natalia, she goes to stop Vanko and Pepper stays to have Hammer arrested. He is carted off by police swearing to get back at the Stark CEO, and from there his fate is unknown.

HOW DIFFERENT DO YOU WANT THE MEMORIES TO BE FROM THEIR CANON? Well, he won’t be aware of the Iron Man armor, because it doesn’t exist. He will still be a weapons manufacturer that ingratiates himself with the government and does dirty deals on the side, but obviously it’ll be way scaled back on the timeline. He’s probably trying to get on Enrico Fermi’s uranium train with shoddy results. But enjoy those mutated babies, Queens. Personality wise, he will be basically the same.

PLANS FOR YOUR CHARACTER: Who wants to buy guns in bulk? The mafia? Well, of course they can! Under the table, from Mr. Hammer, at an oh so reasonable price. Besides that, Justin will definitely be taking public advantage of the Stark Industries fire and the fact that shares in his company are skyrocketing because if it. Is he connected to the arsons? Uh… I’d have to ask you mods. For now I’ll say no, but he definitely didn’t dissuade the Stark Industries one.
