SULU & YOU: AN OCCASIONALLY UP-TO-DATE RELATIONSHIP CHART

IANTO JONES: Sulu isn't used to having a serious relationship. His tendencies towards downplaying serious situations, not to mention a sort of social awkwardness that he never completely outgrew, make it hard for him to really want to focus on having a relationship. Not only that, but it's hard to find someone willing to wait five years to see you again, and Sulu's far too devoted to his job to want to give it up for just anybody. Then came Ianto. It still sometimes scares Sulu just how strongly he feels for the other man, especially considering the time/distance between them and the fact that Sulu just usually doesn't get this invested in a relationship. He's more than willing to do anything for the other man; the type of loyalty he shows towards Ianto is the sort that leads a man to do stupid things with good intentions. This cumulated in Sulu becoming determined to bring Ianto back to life when the 456 killed him. There's a part of him that's always going to be resigned to losing the other man, but the rest of him will not hesitate to move the heavens and earth to keep Ianto around for as long as possible. In all honesty, he loves Ianto - but he hasn't quite gotten the nerve to say it aloud yet.
So we'll try and try - even if it lasts an hour - with all our might; we'll try and make it ours, 'cause we're on our way - we're on our way to fall in love...

JACK HARKNESS: Sulu has nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Jack. Their earlier interactions were a bit rocky, thanks to a very awkward first meeting, but nonetheless Sulu has come to appreciate Jack's command and has referred to him before as his captain, despite the fact that he's already got a perfectly good, suave captain of his own to deal with. At first, admittedly, Sulu was more respectful of Jack because of how close he was to Ianto, and because of their relationship in general, but after the situation with the 456, Sulu has come to realize that he really does view Jack as a man worth following. He's the sort of dashing leader-type that Sulu has always admired - just look at Captain Kirk - and it makes it easier to get along with him. Jack was there for him during a hard time for the both of them, which instantly granted him Sulu's loyalty. And let's face it; Sulu's got a habit of following charming American men into the most dangerous of territories - how could you expect anything less when it comes to Jack?
He makes me want to look good, he makes me feel at ease; he makes me want to write true songs about anything that I please...

LUNA LOVEGOOD: Sulu hasn't had much consistent interaction with Luna. His first real chat with her occurred during the Regression virus, when he was fourteen and she was thirteen. At that point in Sulu's life, girls with radish earrings and strange outlooks on the world made up a pretty good chunk of his social circle. Because of that - combined with an added dose of "this girl's kind of crazy" and a side order of "pretty cute, though," - he'd found her to be a "pretty cool" girl. Now that they're both at their proper ages, however, this whole brief moment of "hey, there's a girl!" that Sulu experienced is a little bit awkward. Luckily, Sulu's pretty good at getting over things like that, and he's able to enjoy talking to Luna on a more appropriate level. She's amicable, understands the inherent awesomeness of plants, and while still kind of registering on his crazy-ometer, she's still a really cool girl. Her generally pleasant, optimistic view of the world makes it hard for Sulu not to like her. Plus, some of the stuff she's talked about makes him really pretty curious about the sort of world she lives on, since he's pretty sure his universe doesn't have nargles or spectrespecs.
You're a little bit weird, but I think that's it's cool; there's no one else like you here at our school...

WILLIAM BIRKIN: On the one hand, Birkin is the guy who pointed out Sulu's TOS counterpart ran around shirtless trying to defend Uhura's honor. On the other hand... he's the guy who pointed out Sulu's TOS counterpart ran around shirtless trying to defend Uhura's honor. Sulu really doesn't mind it too much, all things considered, but Birkin's tendency to troll him has got him on edge once or twice. Plus, he was super creepy as a kid, as far as adolescent!Sulu was concerned, and the vibe never really went away after the Regression Virus was over.
The sixties were fifty years ago, you know... get over it!

SYLAR: Sylar used to not get on Sulu's nerves so much. Sulu himself is probably unsure as to when their relatively mild relationship turned into what it has, but he honestly doesn't care. As far as Sulu's concerned, Sylar is a danger to the general public. He's a narcissitic sociopath with no redeeming qualities, who needs to be watched at all times. He rarely uses the word "hate" in his life, but for Sylar, he's made the exception several times. It's possible that the majority of his dislike stems from two reasons: the first is that Sylar managed to get closer to Captain Kirk in a shorter amount of time than Sulu had been able to achieve (though he only thinks of Jim in a platonic way); the second is that Sylar has attacked him aboard the Enterprise before. The ship is his home, and Sylar's ability to not only attack him (with telepathy, which is a total cheat) but get away with it to the point where Sulu was the one punished for it made the Enterprise just a little less safe for him. Most of Sulu's dislike for Sylar comes from these sorts of subtle cues; it's likely that Sulu doesn't understand his own loathing as well as he seems to. With Captain Kirk out of the picture, however, Sulu has moved from being cautiously polite for the sake of it to being a real catty bitch. He willingly picks out fights with Sylar, even though he knows that it's both incredibly immature and incredibly stupid to do so. After all, Sylar knows where he sleeps. (That being said - if Sulu ever had the chance, he would most likely punch Sylar in the face.)
He's a bad man, and that's the truth; the Devil's law don't need no proof...

MERLIN: Merlin is the type of guy that Sulu just usually happens to get along with. He presents himself as the Nice Guy - not to mention, he's the Nice Guy who can use magic and has seen a real unicorn, seriously, a unicorn, that is sweet. Honestly, though, Merlin reminds him a bit of Chekov, which made it much easier to get along with him, not that it would've been hard otherwise. He's one of the few non-Enterprise people Sulu is okay with calling him "Hikaru," mostly because he felt too awkward to stop him at first and has since gotten used to it. Merlin also has become someone Sulu trusts with the events following the 456 in Cardiff; he managed to find and give Sulu a way to bring Ianto back, and for that, Sulu is eternally grateful. It's likely that if Merlin ever asked for help, Sulu would be there immediately to lend whatever hand he could.
...

NENA TRINITY: Nena's the kind of girl Sulu can really handle talking to. She's assertive and brash, and considering he's only talked to her a few times, that's honestly really helpful to him. He wouldn't say he's a friend of hers, or anything, but chances are if she randomly hit him up and told her to entertain him, he'd do it in good humor.

PETER PETRELLI: Sulu's only talked to Peter once, but he likes the guy for the simple fact that he's the first person to go, "Yeah, knowing you're from a TV show must be weird!" (Look, Sulu doesn't like TOS. He can't help it, OK?) He also seems to be a bit optimistic, which is something Sulu can always appreciate in people.

CLAIRE BENNET: Claire seems to be a relatively level-headed girl, which is always a plus for Sulu. She also hates Sylar, and knows him on a personal level, so it helps justify his loathing for the man. He's a little worried about a girl so young being so eager to kill someone, but it is Sylar, so he's conflicted about whether or not he should be condoning that kind of attitude. He also finds it a little weird that she calls him Hikaru, but she's a teenage girl - he's not going to embarrass her by trying to correct it, especially after this long.

GWEN WILLIAMS: Sulu admittedly doesn't know Gwen that well; he was introduced to Torchwood back when Gwen hadn't been given access to the community, and so he didn't meet her exactly the same way he'd met Jack and Ianto. MOre than that, Sulu was a little overly harsh with her after the events of the 456, and he still feels bad for that, even though they've since made amends. Oh, and she's a pregnant woman, and Sulu's only 22 years old - that sort of intimidates the crap out of him. Still, he trusts her and treats her as a friend, and is glad to know her.

THE ENTERPRISE CREW;

JIM KIRK: Jim is Sulu's captain, and he has all the loyalty Sulu can give to a man in his position. Admittedly, there used to be a little bit of hero-idolizing going on for Sulu, but he's mostly outgrown that. He's not as close to Jim as he'd probably like to be, too, but that doesn't stop him from caring about the other man pretty much like a brother. (They are brothers-in-arms, after all.)

MONTGOMERY SCOTT: Scotty is probably the most entertaining senior officer on the ship and Sulu finds it easy to talk to him, so long as they stay the hell away from topics like "security protocols" or "showing people the engines," which totally happened back when Scotty wasn't even on the community and so it totally doesn't count. He finds Scotty's relationship-of-sorts with Jack highly entertaining - and not only that, it's good for both of them.

LEONARD MCCOY: McCoy is the best doctor in Starfleet, and Sulu knows it for a fact. The man has helped him through enough that he knows he can trust him with pretty much anything.

NYOTA UHURA: ??? needs more cr :( why is this

SPOCK: Spock is the only officer on the ship that Sulu's not even going to think about trying to joke around with. Other than that... needs more cr. :(

PAVEL CHECKOV: Sulu's BFF and his navigator. Sulu would literally be lost without him, and besides, they're bros. He will gladly defend Chekov's honor against Jack any time.

If I've not put your character up here and you think they should be, drop me a line! I'm just awful with keeping these things up to date, so it's likely I've missed our CR in the flurry.
