This post is an extension of a comment I posted over at dyed_hair. My thinking got a little carried away from the initial question, hence my reposting it as a separate essay over here ( Read more... )

Things which have been rocking TTK-verse this week:

  • Discovering that I'm actually qualified for a lot more than I'd thought I was
  • Zoe the hen starting to lay eggs - I got one today and one yesterday.
  • A brown wriggly dog curled up on a white fluffy rug watching the rats

  • How depressing

    takethekey Jul 21, 2008 21:57

In lieu of the longer, more time-consuming post I’m half working on at the moment (in addition to refining the argument of my dissertation, and planning an article), I present you a rather depressing statistic.

This is the percentage of students studying in each subject group:
    1. Medicine & dentistry 2.4%
    2. Subjects allied to medicine 12.8%

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well, let's see.
    1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
    2) Italicize those you intend to read.
    3) Underline the books you LOVE.
    4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon ( Read more... )

  • The pleasures of fourth year, and the tribulations involved in the study of English literature

    takethekey May 29, 2008 11:43

I'm aware that it's a little early to be making this post just now; the academic year hasn't finished yet, so technically I'm still a third year. However, I have ordered the books for next semester, and that's what I'm currently referring to. Usually my books for one semester cost me between £70 and £100, a fact which seems to constantly amaze and ( Read more... )

Firstly, apologies primarily for the appallingly obvious title (poor Shakespeare must roll over in his grave every time someone misuses Sonnet 18. It’s a pity, because I do like that one, although it’s not as good as Sonnet 135, which is my favourite because I’m immature and filthy minded. Segwick does a wonderful reading of it in Between Men, by ( Read more... )

Taking classes in the Gothic is interesting. It helps, of course, that it’s taught by Amusing Professor (my pseudonyms could use some work, perhaps), who, despite being brilliant in her field, screams and drops things a lot. (Example: when fast-forwarding a DVD, she went past the scene she needed, screamed and dropped the remote control. Last ( Read more... )
