Who else here comes from a world where people can use magic? Or - not just that, but people able to do things that most other people can't, things most people would think of as...supernatural.

[A pause.]

I suppose what I'm actually asking is, how do your worlds treat those kinds of people? Do they have to live in secret, or does everyone else know ( Read more... )

Most people where I'm from don't believe in magic. When they find out that you can do it and it's real, reactions range from thinking you're somehow responsible for the creature in the basement to wanting you to teach their bratty kid to do magic.

I'm not sure which is worse.

Sorcery isn't a common skill in Oz, but it's hardly persecuted. As long as witches fall into line with the Wizard, they're labelled 'good' and can come into high standing.

I've never been one to fall into line, however.

The Wizard of Oz is a fake whose managed to worm his way into a position of power, ruling over all of Oz, because he came from another world in a balloon and people found that impressive..

Our Ms. Pensell is a medium. And there are all manner of fortune tellers. And, of course, there is the magician Houdini.

Mostly people who can do those sorts of things work in show business.

[Merlin's just going to take this 100% at face value because he's got no reason to believe otherwise. :c]

Show business?

[BRB dictionary.]

Oh. They...perform for other people?

[Ms. Pensell does legit have psychic powers, and the fortune teller is always right. And George believes that Houdini can do actual magic, so...]

Yes. They tend to be quite popular.

It's not exactly a secret, but people are generally too bloody stupid to see what's in front of them.

So nobody's strictly trying to hide it, but nobody else believes that magic's real anyway?

[This seems like a good system.]

Some people do. But yeah, most people just... try to explain it away.

Pretty crap. There's the whole assumption that you're a criminal, which is just so wrong in basically every case. [Lies. So many lies.]
