Huh. I had to google the term contralto, to my embarrassment. I have never heard that term used in that way that I can remember. I've always heard that vocal range referred to as just "alto." I was especially confused because there's vocal range called contra-alto, which is immensely rare. (It's a female vocal range which falls somewhere on the low end of the tenor range, iirc.) I even sing alto... *facepalms at self*

In any case, I am immensely jealous of you getting to sing in a choir. I miss singing so much. I was invited to jam with a group today, so I get to go do music, but they want a trumpet player, not a vocalist. I used to sing in my car all the time, but now I don't have a car. ^_^

And I totally know what you mean about ranges being irritating. I can never sing along properly to tenor or soprano pop music because I keep having to switch octaves.
