In Character Information
character name: Princess Elise III
Fandom: Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Timeline: Following the final battle in the Last Story, but right before she hits the massive reset button
character's age: 17
powers, skills, pets and equipment:
Elise is your normal princess, except for the fact that she spends 10 years being the vessel for a being called Iblis, when, unleashed (by crying, of all things), apparently sends the world to a fiery apocalyptic future. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "She cries, everyone dies" doesn't it?
Oh, and don't forget using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to bring an anthropomorphic hedgehog back to life. By kissing him.
Of course, since Iblis has been released from it's seal and joined with Mephiles to form Solaris, the container for fiery doom might be a rather moot point.
canon history:
Solaris. The Flame of Hope. It was said that when the flame grew large enough, it would allow people to control time and thus, move throughout history, righting the wrongs of the past and changing the face of the future.
Elise is the only child of the Duke and Duchess of Soleanna. Her mother died when she was young, and her father when she was 7. Although Elise doesn't remember this time very well, she knows it was when her country almost faced the wrath of Soleanna's sun god, Solaris, in the form of the Flames of Disaster.
However, before he died, her father imparted on her words that still lived with her, even 10 years later, when he told her to become a strong queen and to never, ever cry. Words she would live by for quite a long time.
But why she shouldn't cry wouldn't be known for some time.
In her 17th year, as the city of Soleanna was beginning their annual festival to honor Solaris and ask for his protection, when Dr. Eggman struck. Setting his missiles onto the city, he attempted to kidnap the princess and take her Chaos Emerald and the secret of the Flames of Disaster, only be thwarted by the timely arrival of one Sonic the Hedgehog. At first, it seemed as if Sonic and Elise were able to escape, but it turned out not be so. Elise entrusted the Chaos Emerald to Sonic for safe keeping.
Sonic and Tails manage to track her down in the desert and after defeating the Egg Cerberus, flee into the desert. Tails goes on to act as a distraction while Sonic takes Elise back to Soleanna. They manage to make it back to the city, only for Sonic to be accosted by a mysterious hedgehog named Silver. During this, Elise is kidnapped again.
Sonic and company track her down again, but Sonic is forced into setting off a Chaos Control and sending himself, Tails and Knuckle into the future where they discover that Elise had died in an explosion on Eggman's ship.
During this time, Elise manages to escape from Eggman with Amy's help, only to be recaptured again shortly after.
Returning back to the present time, Sonic once again saves Elise from Eggman, only for her get kidnapped (again, seeing a pattern here?) when Silver again decides to butt in. So, Sonic once again follows Eggman only to catch Elise who took matters into her own hands and jumped from Eggman's ship.
Of course, this can't be, because it's Eggman, so he turns to dastardly means to force Elise to come back with him, i.e., threatening to destroy Soleanna if she doesn't. So Elise gives herself up, once again causing Sonic to play catch up, only this time, he is joined by Silver, who seemingly had a change of heart and is intent on saving Elise too.
But alas, as Tails read during their trip to the future, it was not meant to be. Grieved, Sonic watches in horror as he realizes what the explosion means, until Silver suggests using Chaos Control to go back and keep the ship from exploding in the first place; or at least rescuing her before the ship explodes. Upon returning, Sonic takes on Eggman one last time and defeats him, escaping with Elise and landing on a grassy hill below. Following this, Elise and Sonic prepare to make a return trip back to Soleanna, firmly believing that the worse is over.
But that was not meant to be, as Mephiles interfered and killed Sonic right in front of Elise, causing her to do the one thing she had always been told not to, cry.
Because crying would release Iblis, the Flames of Disaster if you will, from the confinement the Duke had placed upon it 10 years earlier, by sealing the burning flames inside one of Royal blood, his daughter. Solaris had been split during an incident termed "The Solaris Project" where the Duke had hoped to harness the God's energy. Instead, the God split into two pieces, with Iblis being sealed in Elise and Mephiles, the other half, becoming sealed in the scepter of darkness.
Elise, Sonic's body, and the others met up in a time-space rift created by Solaris who wished to destroy all the existing timelines. As the others mourn their fallen friend (and adversary, as Eggman is there too), they believe that their only way to defeat Solaris is gone as well, as Eggman points out, it exists in all timelines, in the past, present and future. When Silver responds that that they'll just have to defeat it in all those places, Shadow points out that they could've, if one of the pieces hadn't already been killed.
Before everyone gives up hope, however, Elise suddenly feels something on the wind around her and cries out that she doesn't think Sonic is dead yet. While the others look at her, she explains that she can still feel his presence and Silver suggests finding the Chaos Emeralds and reviving him. The others agree and go off to search, but not before Amy makes Elise promise to watch over Sonic until they return.
When the others return with Emeralds in hand, Elise makes a wish upon them to bring Sonic back to them. Sonic awakens, in his Super form, and is joined by both Super Shadow and Super Silver and they head off to do battle with Solaris.
Following the epic battle, which allows Solaris to take its true form, there is just one last task left at hand: blowing out the Flame and fixing the shattered timelines. For Elise, this means giving up the timeline where she met Sonic and his friends. They spent a few fleeting moments together before Elise finally blows out the flame, but smiling, just like Sonic wanted her too.
And then she awakened in a place foreign to her, a strange hotel in a land that she's never seen before...
personality:
There are two conflicting sides to Elise: the dutiful princess and the girl who simply wants to live. While Elise is normally very good at managing to remain as the dutiful princess, the adventure with Sonic and his friends show her another side of herself, one that is willing to take risks and maybe even die if she needs to for her people.
Not that Elise didn't understand her duty, far from it in fact, but she didn't truly understand the words her parents would speak to her when little until this adventure, as she finally understood the love her parents had for their country and everyone in it.
Elise begins the game as a sheltered, lonely princess, until saved by Sonic. She is very formal when it comes to her dealings with others and usually seems to keep people at a distance, but as Sonic's continued presence and free spirit begins to change Elise's outlook on life, she begins to shed various layers of her "princess persona" and become a regular girl who speaks of regular things, such as her desire for adventure to Sonic or even love and crushes with Amy.
Sonic's more reckless traits begin to rub off on Elise as well, as she take's Sonic's words to heart, such as "nothing starts until you take action" and "if you have time to worry, then run." This is specially obvious during three events during the game: when Elise, deciding not to wait around for Sonic to rescue her, attempts to escape on her own, only be run into and be helped by Amy; when Elise takes her fate into her own hands and lets herself fall from Eggman's ship rather than be a prisoner and during the final events of Sonic's side of the game, while escaping Eggman's crashing ship.
Elise's emotions, however, are a different story. She usually keeps them bottled away, especially sadness (in order to keep herself from crying). Again, interaction with Sonic and his friends causes Elise to face them, as with Amy's needling her about a potential crush (makes you wonder if she really ever got an "girl talk" around the castle) and Sonic's free spirit and his continued expression of his desire to only see her smile more.
The end scene of the game, before the flame is blown out, is a true show of how far she's come. Telling Sonic that she doesn't care what happens to the world, she accepts that she has girlish whims and can feel selfish, but at the same time, knows what she must do and does it. Even though it hurts and even though it means having to give up a treasured friendship.
