once in a while i dream exactly where i left off in another dream. it's an indescribable feeling to recognize a place in your dream, a place that does not exist in reality. my writing teacher who writes poetry told us in class, "you know when you're driving and you get lost and you keep driving and driving and finally find something you recognize? it's more distant and self-contained than eternal sunshine..., not to mention more abstract and harder to like, but give it another chance. it's one of my favorite movies, ever, and i think you'll grow to like it. personally i found eternal... kind of overlong and cliche, but it was definitely great. i consider science of sleep his breakthrough film, though. maybe i'm just a sucker for the film's visual aspects, though. it's practically made for my aesthetic and narrative biases (i love an inconclusive ending, especially).

hello there.

i also loved the visuals because i'm a sucker for stop-motion animation (i always find it charming). the dialogue was lovely too.

but i watched it three times and i still don't know what bothers me about it. either the dream parts of it were too incoherent or it was stéphane's character. i found him to be exactly the kind of guy i never want to date. there was something too self-important/indulgent and selfish about him that i did not find endearing at all. the ending just made me think of him as a little boy, which is he not, who escapes into his dreams unwilling to confront reality. which i understand is this kind of theme that gondry likes to explore but with eternal sunshine the two characters faced the consequences for their escapism and owned up to it. they both experienced real suffering from their actions and i felt more connected to them because of that.
