Wow, that's awesome! Put the camera on a tripod and take several pictures with different exposures, you can probably get a good picture out of it by combining them.
No need to backtrack, they're not good photos. I don't think we have a tripod, though. I've never been very serious about photography, although one of these days I'd like to learn maybe.
I'm not sure about Boston prices, but in the burbs a crappy tripod can be purchased for $20 or less. Cheep enough for experimentation.
Assuming that this is a digital camera, you may be able to get a better photo by adjusting the "white balance" setting. Digital cameras need to be told what "white" is, much like Clinton needed help with "is".
Alternately, a full spectrum light-bulb or daylight illumination may help the color balance.
Also, illuminate the painting brighter than you think you need to, but from two different angles not close to the angle the camera is at (so if the painting is on the ground and the camera is directly above it, place a lamp a few feet to the right and another one a few feet to the left, directed at the painting).
