Not to belittle the pain that the student experienced, this is actually one of the reasons that I never wear my mp3 player in public. Maybe that type of caution seemed more natural in Chicago, but doing such a thing makes you a better target to both sneak up on and to rob from.

For my one experience with street mugging, I now remind myself not to flash my cell phone if an unfamiliar thug asks me if i know the time.
