"You could have died."
Her tone is scolding, but quieter than usual, reflecting a rarely-shown concern. He only sniffles and grumbles in response, eyebrows knitted together in an irritated frown, edging a few broken words through chattering teeth as he pulls the blanket she'd given him tighter around his bony shoulders. She makes out her brother's name, and that's really all she needs to hear.
She sighs slow and deep, a sigh of long-borne melancholy, and sits beside him on the couch. "You could have died," she repeats, voice softer yet, and this time his only reply is silence.
They'd never been close, not even what one could call 'friends'. Mutually civil, even vaguely fond at times, but never close. Circumstances had never allowed. His entire world had revolved around her brother and their beloved Professor--
--perhaps it's because of the inevitable rush of memories that this situation is bothering her so deeply. For a moment she wonders if this is how he lives day to day, plagued by the remnants of their ruined childhood, and she feels a sudden pang of sympathy for him. Chewing her bottom lip for a moment, she relents and leans into him, resting her head on his shoulder. It's an awkward motion, and he tenses from the sheer oddity of it, but says nothing.
"I'll book you a room in the hotel," she finally says. The statement is out-of-place, too formal considering the self-conscious affection, yet oddly enough it seems to put him a little at ease. Maybe it's because he's still half-frozen, still not quite fully conscious (or, at least, that's what he'll blame it on if she ever mentions it), but he reciprocates the lean. Barely, but it’s noticeable.
They stay in silence like this for a long time--or maybe it’s only a few minutes--before he finally announces that he's going to go to the hotel, and stands from the couch, shrugging the blanket from his frame to hand back to her.
"Keep it," she says with a light smile, an unreadable smile.
Though certainly finding it odd, he folds the blanket over his arm and heads for the door, pausing only to give a glance over his shoulder, and quietly, "…Thanks." Then, as soon as he'd come, he's gone.
And, for the first time in as long as she can remember, she cries.
