Unfortunately, Kratos had not been present for that fateful visit to Exire, nor had he ever purposefully set foot in that dismal city in the clouds. The atmosphere aside (His natural melancholy needed no additional environmental prompts; he got enough of those from Derris-Kharlan.), he had always sensed that it would be in bad taste for him, a human, to intrude so boldly in a "haven" for half-elves.

So it was that he had no idea who Virginia was. It was common sense that the Sage siblings have parents, but it was not Kratos' business to think about them, and so he never had. Therefore, even the very idea that the older-looking version of Raine Sage walking down the street could be her mother never crossed his mind.

What he was aware of was the fact that time and space worked differently within this nexus, and that the appearance of an older Raine Sage was not implausible. Actually, it was curious. She had a doll in her arms and appeared to be talking to it avidly. It was not in Raine's nature to become insane -- at least, he had ( ... )

Virginia turned at the sound of her daughter's name; seeing a man she didn't recognize, she was a little confused, but Kloitz took Raine around sometimes too--he was a good father as well as husband. So, she smiled at him and said, "Oh, you know my daughter?"

That would have been normal enough... but then she looked down at the doll in her arms. "Say hi, Raine," she prompted gently. Yes, the baby was a little young to be talking, but she could say a few words, and "hi" was one of them. She also said "mama", "papa", and of course "no".

Most of the time, he could maintain an iron grip on his reactions, but there were some cases where even Kratos could not withhold all of his surprise. Right now was a good example, although he had the sense of mind to rein it in as swiftly as possible.

"In passing," he said carefully. Raine had never mentioned that while she was in no condition worth institutionalizing, her mother was, but then, he likewise had never shared much about Anna with her. "I'm sorry, I don't believe we've met before. You are...?"

"Virginia Sage. You know my husband, Kloitz, then?" Like a newlywed, she was happy just to mention her spouse; there were other emotions reflected in her eyes, though, that wasn't so happy. For one, she was very, very lost, and not just in the physical sense.

It was clear she didn't think the "baby" in her arms was a newborn, but she was aware enough to know that the doll was floppier than a real toddler; she held it very close, much the way a child would. Especially if frightened.
