If Balinor dies, Merlin will never forgive Arthur. I could even see him leaving Camelot and to hell with destiny. I love that Arthur is so determined not to let Merlin die that he'd sacrifice someone else for it. Great job.

Agreed--it will be a very tricky situation. Arthur has himself a bit of a dilemma.

Oh my, I ache for Merlin; so close to getting to know his father, yet it's all slipping away from him, and Arthur, making an impossible decision to save his friend/servant.

I do not know how the situation will resolve, if it ever does and if their relationship will survive the aftermath.

I was aching for him too when I was writing this. I was kind of tempted to just be like, "Eh, screw it, let's just have Merlin and Arthur give each other lots of happy, fluffy hugs. Shirtless, preferably." However, as drool-worthy as that would be, this is what came out instead. Darn my intention to keep the characters reasonably in character...

Oh no, I *love* that you keep the characters in character. So much so that it is like the show, so don't you dare change that, lol. It's just an impossible situation all around, that is what makes it worse. Great work :).

It's incredibly frustrating that Arthur knows that Balinor shouldn't be killed and he still has to allow it to happen and Merlin knows he could help his father live and Arthur can't allow it to happen. I don't know how this can possibly be resolved without Merlin resenting whatever decision Arthur makes.

I think in some ways, Arthur is as much a victim in this situation as Merlin is. He's running the risk of losing Merlin's friendship because of circumstances out his control, and he's being forced to make decisions he doesn't want to make, but which he can't avoid. Like you said, whatever he does, Merlin will resent it.
