You know, just reading this has made me think twice about working for any sort of news/media outlet. The whole anxiety and despair about the world thing... well. I'm still avoiding the news like the plague, let's put it that way. I mean, I catch the things that are unavoidable (AOL opening page, le sigh) but otherwise, hell, I'm anxious enough without concrete reasons to be.
and that's perfectly ok. you know, there are some people who can't go a morning without reading the new york times from front to back, and think that makes them a better person for doing so...i happen to think it's just as important to spend those 2 hours loving someone (example) and making life worth living for you and for them. but i'm a hopeless romantic, and will never make any earth-shattering global impact. hey, i'm ok with that.
well, of course you have an addiction, randy. you moved to the media capital of the world. and you're a greenie. :)
some people live in bubbles, unaware of the world outside their area code.
people like me absorb the news, empathize with the weight of the world's pain, and get lost in the futility of it all. (And wouldn't dare to procreate.)
natalia, please catch me up on your life! i'm curious, and i'm still really sad we missed each other in cincinnati. how did you end up back there, i thought you were a teacher in philly?

natalia natalia natalia.
i'm psyched to hear about your life changing events, it's courageous to take charge and change course.
i moved to portland for a) no reason and b) school. i decided to continue with Germanics and throw in some linguistics, applied more than likely but maybe not. it's pretty much as awesome as you've heard with lots of like minded people and it's close to the ocean and volcanoes and i'm a nut for catestrophic geology. i would feel deep regret if i never lived anywhere in danger of lava. and yeah, i just wanted to get far away from home and my comfort zone. sadly it doesn't snow often to my knowledge, but the upside is if they really do get a snow storm, i hear everyone freaks out. it does rain everyday, i love rainy days so i like it. the food is awesome for veggies, vegans, and foodies alike.
i'm glad you're happy and wanting to be creative. i just got a mac, over christmas we'll hook up and record some silly songs.

Oh, re: Mr. Anxiety... that would be my dad, he drove up with me. And I'm living with my aunt and uncle out in the farmland/boonies of Franklin. :)

consensus is that i have a media addiction, though i try to use the bleakness and absurdity as a motivator.
good luck with finding a job with better hours.
