Song: The Craftsman

New thing... I rather like it. No music yet, but that will likely come in its season. The trigger for this was a Marples plane. Yes, that one. Go read some Jack Lewis if you will. Oh - and I believe one of my grandfathers was a carpenter, too ( Read more... )

"a Marples plane"

I now have this odd image of Miss Marples as a pilot *g*. I'm sure that wasn't what was in your mind...

I like it, and am interested to hear your tune. Unusually I actually have something of a tune for it (not as far as I know one from anything else, and it doesn't sound like one of yours; vaguely Lackey/Fish, I suppose). Just transcribed it (without being able to play it here at work) and sent it to myself in case it's usable for something.

Marples was a British toolmaking firm. I have a set of their chisels. I haven't heard about them making planes lately, but they may have done so in the past. A good woodworking plane, given some TLC, can remain serviceable for decades.

I think they recently got bought out by some conglomerate, so I have some concerns about the quality of their current products.

Thanks for the explanation (oops, pun not intended!). Yes, we used to have a set of tools from an ancestor (grandfather, possibly with a great- on front?). I don't know what happened to them after I left home, but I remember using them as a teenager and they were still usable.

I gathered from context that Marples was something of the sort, but the other image was too surreal not to share.

Beautifully succinctly eloquent... evokes melody, but I'm sure your's will be much finer. Beautiful & just right.
