Receiving a text or phone call from Senga in the morning wasn’t, in itself, unusual, but when Kitayama rolled over to see that it was 5:30am, he sluggishly rubbed enough sleep out of his eyes to read the bright text.
Can I come over?
He stared at his phone, back at his clock, and then back at his phone.
Sure. Why not?
As soon as he arrived, Senga immediately threw himself into his boyfriend’s arms. Kitayama looked at him in alarm. “Senga? What’s wrong?”
The younger boy shook his head but to Kitayama, it felt as though he was trying to bury himself as deeply into his arms as he could. Deciding to leave it alone for the moment, he gathered his boyfriend into his arms and carried him to his bed. Cradled in his arms, Senga fell back asleep almost instantly. He watched him sleep for a bit, still wondering, before following him into dreamland.
By the time he woke up again, it was bright in his room and he wasn’t surprised to find that Senga was already awake.
“You made breakfast?”
Senga looked up from where he was shoveling rice into his mouth. “Nn! Mmpf mn-“
“Swallow first.”
“Your mom did,” he said cheerfully after he gulped down the food. “Boy was she surprised to see me!”
“I bet…” Kitayama mumbled, serving himself some rice. He was lucky. His mother knew about them and she was supportive… but Senga’s family, as far as he knew, had no clue about their relationship. The younger boy didn’t say much about it, but he could tell that he didn’t think his parents would be thrilled.
“You’re always so grumpy in the morning,” Senga said, not bothered at all. Everyone knew that interaction with him in the morning was sometimes damned near impossible.
The older boy watched him eat. He was talking cheerfully about school and work and something funny Tsuka told him and everything except for the reason he was there. Anyone who knew anything about Senga would have been able to tell that he was acting too cheerful. Kitayama waited until he was chewing the last bit of his breakfast before asking what was wrong.
When his only response was a head shake and a downward stare, Kitayama rose from his seat, pulling Senga with him back into his bedroom.
Once again snuggled in the warmth of his comforter, Kitayama asked again.
Senga squeezed his eyes shut, finally giving in. “I had a bad dream,” he finally mumbled.
“You wanna tell me about it?” he asked, kissing him on the forehead before running his fingers through the younger boy’s hair.
Sighing into the familiar feeling, he snuggled further into Kitayama’s arms. “I don’t know where I was… it was a forest, in some sort of camp… but there was this fence… a chain-link fence that enclosed the whole camp.
All of a sudden, everyone started running towards one side. I didn’t know what was going on, but I was running too… and that’s when I saw you.”
Senga paused, eyes squeezed shut again. Kitayama kept running his fingers through his hair, trying to calm him down. Senga was shaking.
“I couldn’t get to you,” he finally managed, letting out a shuttered breath. “I could see you and touch you, but only through the fence. I don’t really remember, but it felt like there was a time limit. We could only see each other for a certain amount of time. The others on my side of the fence were starting to walk away from the fence, but I didn’t want to leave you. For some reason, it felt like I wouldn’t be seeing you for a long time… I couldn’t get to you. Something was pulling me backwards and I just couldn’t get to you.”
He was crying now and he felt stupid for doing so. It was just a stupid dream. He knew that, but the hurting in his chest wouldn’t go away.
“I love you.”
Senga’s eyes shot open. He looked up at the other boy, surprised. “W-what?”
He repeated his words at a whisper, not at all phased by the younger boy’s reaction.
They’d been together as friends for years, as a couple for a couple months… but they had never talked about it before. Anyone who bothered to look could see that Senga was head over heels for the oldest member of their group, but Kitayama was not so easily read. He had a playboy reputation that wasn’t easily forgotten, but Senga knew that he would never just throw those words around. If he was saying them, he truly meant them. Senga understood that.
And started crying all over again.
Kitayama chuckled, hugging his boyfriend closer. “Don’t worry so much about a fence. Things like that are there only because what’s on the other side is worth that much more.”
Owari.
