Writing Tip Of The Week

UPDATES:

Tomorrow I should finish the first draft of Lifesphere book 2! I thought I would have it done LOOOONG before now, but now the end is here I can’t believe it’s done. It felt like the novel that never ended for a few weeks there.

Once it’s finished, I’ll be taking a week off. I’ll probably still do a few hundred words a day on some project ( Read more... )

Yeah. I find fantasy really easy to write. While I love writing horror, I find the modern setting really difficult. I keep trying, because I like a challenge, but fantasy is just so.... smooth and silky.

I think the thing I love best about fantasy (and horror) is that you can tell the truth and people can't abuse you for it. Or, they can, but not in the same way.

You can talk about sexism and racism and religion and set it in a fictional world and rename things... and say what you want to say. You can't do that in real life and you can't do that on fiction set in strict reality. Not without death threats, anyway.

I'll try my hand at anything spec-fic, with a preference for epic fantasy. Though I don't think I'd be able to get a grip on hard sci fi. They tend to do all the things I love in fiction- failure means death or death and your land being taken over by tyrants or the end of life as we know it, and they tend to look at ideas and what ifs and ideology in cool ways.

Congrats on finishing the draft. *throws confetti*

'Science fiction tells you how the clock works; fantasy goes right on ahead and tells you the time.' - David Eddings.

Love that quote. Grin. I think you can write hard sci fi without the... dissection of the clock. Like you, I tend to prefer fantasy. But I’m going off the classic English style knights and dragons. I think there is a lot of room for creativity still in the genre.

Ooh, yay, good for you finishing that draft up! It's very encouraging seeing my friends complete their various projects. Er, at least the drafts.

I hope you hear from your agent soon. And it's definitely understandable if you need a little break from LJ. Honestly, I should probably sign off in a minute here and put some serious time into Gnarled Roots.

Hey, what genres do you write in, specifically? I know we've talked about it before, but where do you currently stand. I know you're into fantasy, and I remember you sometimes write horror, though you're much more into splatterpunk type writing than I am. What ever happened to that novel with the girl who kills her husband? Are you still working on that?

Actually... I just realized I have no idea what this project is about. What's the story behind Lifesphere? I need a comprehensive list of your projects, lmao. I feel bad when I can't remember details about my friends' books like that, but it's been awhile since we discussed them ( ... )

Despite what I said to you, I’m working on two projects at the moment. Editing one and writing the first draft of another. It’s hurting my head a little as one is first person and the other is third person, but it’s nice to be making progress ( ... )
