You're making me wish I could find my copy of the book...
I think on the gigolo issue, that the line is very blurry. For some of the women dancing is enough, but for others it wouldn't be. But given the time period, wouldn't most of those older ladies have been raised at the tail end of the Victorian period? It might not take that much to give them a bit of a thrill.
As for Sayers being a fangirl, oh most definitely yes. Ask any Sherlockian!

I agree. I'm sure they were quite titillated by the dancing and flirtation. And nobody thinks that Paul Alexis and Mrs. Weldon actually had sex, right? But if he married her, he would have to do his husbandly duty from time to time, and that would have boiled down to prostitution.
I love the beard jokes. He has a beard! It's so exotic! I adore HHC the book, but I do agree that the TV adaptation is actually really good, and manages to convey the plot - even the code scenes - really cleverly and swiftly.
I think the things is that we already kind of know what Peter's impressions of Harriet in her swimming costume would be... so it's much more interesting to hear what she thinks!
I think this is one of the better film adaptations of the Wimsey/Vane novels- it really hits the mark, and the pacing is excellent.

It may or may not be a pity that DLS didn't give us Peter's impression of Harriet in her swimming costume...
