"Bubble reputation" -- Think of it as "the bubble known as 'reputation'" and it may make more sense.

ah, it does! I mean, it's fairly obvious from context what Wimsey wanted to communicate, but i couldn't work out the quote there.
thanks!

I've heard of Philo Vance, but only in the context that the character of Ellery Queen was originally modelled on him. (EQ was reworked, thank goodness, after the first few EQ books, once the authors had some practice at characterization.)

What is it about the name Vavasour? It crops up in MMA, too. Was "John Smith" too subtle a fake?

I'd love to read fic of the final awkward dinner, with Peter being brooding and Harriet thinking "Oh God, I've got to get away from this".

What do you think of the TV adaptation ending? I confess I really like it - OK, in terms of the pacing it is wrong as there's another three years to go, but I still like the not-even-almost kiss.

I thought it was Vavasour being a -- theatrical name? That might just be reinforcing itself as I reread the book. Working in the theatre, wouldn't it be relatively common to have changed your name? (specially if it was John Smith!) I'm thinking about a couple of scenes in a schoolgirl novel where the main character is joining a dance company and it's expected that she change her name -- expected by the rest of the company but also her non-dancing friends.

I've never seen any tv adaptions of Sayers books. I didn't even realise there were any til this year!

The Philo Vance novels are apparently in the public domain and are up at http://gutenberg.net.au/plusfifty-n-z.html#letterV , if anyone's interested. I've only read the first one, and I don't remember much about it except that the urge to hit Vance repeatedly in the face with a brick began on about page one-half and never went away. ...They may get better later. He was played by William Powell in a TV adaptation, IIRC?

I think with that glowing recommendation i might continue to be unaware of What Philo Vance Would Do.
