Character
Name: Machi Kuragi
Series: Fruits Basket
Timeline: Directly after chapter 112 (or, basically, Volume 19) in the manga
Canon Resource Links: wiki info on Fruits Basket, wiki info on Machi, Fruits Basket wiki on Machi

Affiliation: Breeder

Personality: Machi is, in a word, quiet. She's overwhelmingly shy; she tends to keep to herself and to the back of a room, not speaking unless spoken to. In the student council, for example, she really doesn't offer much input until either Yuki or Kakeru drags her into the discussion. In addition to simply being shy, Machi has no social skills to speak of. She doesn't seem to have an understanding of how social interactions and basic communication work. So she's awkwardly shy, but even when she gets over her shyness, she's still incredibly awkward because she sucks at relating to people.

Her horrible childhood has instilled in her a deep-rooted fear of perfection. When she was younger, her mother demanded perfection from her so that she would be chosen as her father's heir over her illegitimate half-brother; because she feels stifled and threatened by perfection, she now has a compulsion to destroy anything that looks too perfect, such as freshly-fallen snow, an organized room, or a new box of chalk. This doesn't endear her to authority figures or those who appreciate cleanliness (i.e., Student Council Secretary Naohito; he's pretty fed up with all of her outbursts).

When she's around someone she's more comfortable with (or is being teased by, either way), she is able to express her emotions more easily. She is actually relatively quick to anger, especially when embarrassed by a kind act from the President or stupid comments from her half-brother. This can lead to ridiculously irrational arguments, especially since they stem from someone who's usually rather logical; she's just easily flustered.

Underneath everything, however, Machi isn't a bad person. She can be quite sweet and kind when the situation calls for it, although it's usually accompanied with her crippling shyness. She buys a gift for Tohru when she is injured, despite not knowing her personally, simply because she's grateful that the other girl helped Yuki; she also offers understanding and support to Yuki, such as when she broke down the locked closet door to free him because she worried that he would hate being alone in there. Also, if you do her a kindness, she'll do you one back. She's both polite and fair, so she will pay back her debts...even if it takes her a while to do so.

So yes. She's a kind but shy person, and although it takes time to get her to open up, once you do, you'll have a friend for life.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

strengths;
❀ Machi's incredibly perceptive. She sees right through Yuki's "prince" exterior in the series, recognizing the loneliness he tried to hide from everyone.
❀ She's pretty good at math, being the student council treasurer. She also excels academically, in general.
❀ She can keep a flat/blank/poker face in almost any situation.
❀ Machi is a hard worker, when she sets her mind to it.
❀ She's very polite.
❀ Once you get past her neutral exterior, Machi's actually a pretty nice person. She can react in anger, but she'd never be cruel to someone for no apparent reason (unless she's destroying something, because that's extenuating circumstances).
❀ She’s got a mean punch/slap. As her half-brother (and only her half-brother) would know.

weaknesses;
✖ Thanks to her traumatic childhood, she's terrified of perfection, to the point where she has an uncontrollable urge to destroy anything that looks perfect (fresh snow, organized papers, etc.)
✖ She has...no social skills. At all. Seriously.
✖ She doesn't know how to flirt or be coy; when interacting with someone she likes, she just gets flustered and will likely start yelling. Or just clamming up. Either way, she isn't a charmer in any sense of the word.
✖ Emotions, how does she have them? She tends to come across as an emotioness weirdo, even though she's not; she just is super, super shy.
✖ Machi has issues with herself; she doesn't know who "she" is, aside from a blank slate. She worked so hard to make her mother happy that she never bothered to find out what made her happy, and as a result simple questions like "what's your favorite color?" really throw her for a loop. She's getting better, but slowly.

Samples

First Person Sample: [ The video clicks on. There's a teenage girl on screen, just...staring at the PokéGear with a blank expression. After a few moments, she seems to lose interest and sets it down, turning instead to a yellow, mouse-like Pokémon.

Softly, almost too soft to hear: ] ...What...are you? A mouse?

Pichu! Pi pi!

'Pipi'...

Is that...your name?

Pi pi pichu!

...Hello, Pipi-san.

[ The girl reaches out to brush a hand against the mouse-like critter-and suddenly, there's a burst of electricity. Both girl and creature collapse once the bright light fades, and the residual electricity in the air soon cuts out the feed. ]

Third Person Sample: Taking on a job at the PokéCenter had seemed like a good idea at first. Machi was running a little low on money, and since working seemed to be the most common way of getting more, she figured she could give it a try.

She'd been given the job of an information tech, sorting and organizing files. At first, it hadn't seemed like a bad job; she didn't have to deal with customers or other people very often, and sorting papers was certainly within her skill set.

It wasn’t until a few days into her part-time job that the strain of organization had started to take its toll. The room was filled with neatly-filed cabinets, each drawer of which opened to show pristinely-sorted papers. It all seemed to mock her-Machi felt suffocated, threatened, and it was hard to concentrate. Her hands tightened absent-mindedly on the papers, and she longed to trash the whole room.

But she’d promised President and the rest of the student council that she’d never do it again, and really, she’d been working on controlling her outbursts. Machi didn’t want to let them down…but at the same time, every time she slid a file into its proper place, her breath seemed to get a little shallower and she could almost hear her mother’s voice in her ear.

‘You have to be perfect if you want to beat that woman’s son!’

Something inside her snapped.

By the time she’d finished with her outburst, Machi had managed to scatter a number of important files all over the floor. A drawer or two had been partially emptied, half of its contents now haphazardly thrown about. She took a minute to collect herself. Kakeru wasn’t here to clean up after her messes, and although she really should quit, she had a feeling that they wouldn’t appreciate her leaving the room in this condition. She took a deep breath, and then she set to work on returning all the files to their proper places.

Perhaps another job would be a better fit.
