I posted this in sca-heralds but the moderator hasn't approved it yet, and I want to make sure you get the info.

Checking in:

Rygh, Oluf. Norske Gaardnavne (Norwegian Farm Names)
http://www.dokpro.uio.no/rygh_ng/rygh_form.html

The forms from Rygh show several farm-names with a first element containing troll combined with various landscape generics. The headword in each case is the Old Norse form, and those headwords with an asterisk (*) in front of them are hypothesized from the later placename evidence.

*Trollsruð ("troll's clearing", from troll, "a giant, fiendish monster"; and ruð, "a clearing in a wood")
   Trolßrød 1593
   Trolßrøed og T. nordre 1668
   Trolsrøed og T. nordre 1723

Trolldalr ("troll dale", dalr, "a dale")
   i Trolledaale 1320 (dative form)
   Trolddald 1593
   Throldall 1604
   Troldallen 1668
   Troldahlen 1723

Trollsáss ("troll's ridge", in placenames áss is "a rocky ridge")
i Trolzasæ (no date, dative form)
   Trolsas 1459
   Trolßaas 1593
   Throelsaas 1600
   Throllaaß, Trolsaasß 1604
   Trolßaas 1625
   Trolsaas nordre ( ... )

Weird; the comment came to me screened.

I've relayed the information to Bjørn, he'll be submitting as "Bjørn av Trollfjørden", and your information on using "Troll[location]" as a surname is included. I think it'll be helpful in establishing that Trollfjørden, as a construction was possible, even if it's not been recorded.

Thanks!

Hey there dude !
I am a computer science student, who also has some interest in math (these fields are pretty bound - don't you find ? )

Anyway, I don't like begging ppl for a friendship, but just thought we might find some common issues for a conversation.

Oh, I'll also note that I'll probably have to read your posts through Babelfish or some other translation service. I'm good with English, Spanish, and French, and mildly conversant with German, but the only Russian I know how to say is "Да," and "Нет."

It seems to me that you're someone I should know. Who are you?

You might know me as Thomas Hauptmann -- I'm the really tall guy who mucks around somewhat with calligraphy, avoids illumination as much as possible, and fences.

I'll be MIT'ing at Ymir tomorrow, if you get over that way -- or look for me selling fleece in Merchant's Row.
