James Lester sat at the window and watched the outside world change. A hour ago it had started to snow. Slowly the little ice crystals tumbled to earth.
The snow fell so fast but the sun started to melt it away. And it was still very cold.

A faint whimper from outdoors startled him.

When he opened the frontdoor Lester saw a shivering brown and white dog with long drooping ears sitting on the step, a slip of paper under the dog's collar,
"I'm Fred, looking for a new home. Please take care of me," he read.

Shocked, James took the cute doggie in his arms and carried it in the house. "No one should be outside in the cold right now," he told it.

He thought about his lover who was in the same situation, out in the world, on a secret assignment.
Lester just hoped he would come back safe and sound.

Fred sniffed curiously in every corner of her new shelter. After she'd been fed some chicken soup, she finally laid down on the carpet nearby Lester's feet.

The next morning Lester took her outside for a walk and got ready to go to work.

Fred watched the man trying to hide his worry behind a stony mask before he left the house.

Afterwards Fred waddled into the bedroom, sniffing at some clothes spread out on a chair which smelled entirely different from her caretaker's smell before hopping on the large bed to take a nap.

Many hours later Lester came back from work. He had been so nice and had purchased a basket for her, two feeding dishes, some dog toys and a varity of dog food and snacks.
Fred raced to him and was petted on the head and stroked behind the ears.

After a long walk, Fred munched on a rawhide bone and kept a wary eye on Lester who stared into space on the couch in the livingroom.

The next morning there were deep lines of worry on Lester's forehead. Fred padded over to him and rubbed her head gently against the man's leg.

Later, when Lester had gone to work and Fred slumbered on the bed again, she heard some noices from the living room.

A man staggered in, weary and dirty, and disappeared into the bathroom. He smelled similar to the clothes she had found on the chair.

Fred hopped down and watched as the man came back and sank down on the bed, now naked and clean.

The man slept for hours with Fred guarding him.

When Lester came home, Fred saw a big smile forming on her new owner's face when he saw the man he named Lyle.

Content, Fred snuggled into her basket and tried to sleep despite the odd noises coming from the bedroom.

Deep in the night Fred woke and toddled over to the bed. Her new masters lay there, spooned, sleeping soundly.

Fred sighed with pleasure as she got comfortable on the pillow above their heads.

To be together with her favourite people had been worth the long journey in the cold.
