Helen looked down on the bodies at the stream. The group of terminally ill pre-hominids were dead, just like the clone she'd instructed to wait on the rock.
Had she really been so perfect with her mad woman act that they had believed her performance in the future ARC so easily? Perhaps she should try her luck as an actor the next time she needed money instead of sending her clones to commit a bank robbery or taking it from Becker's wallet.
But she had expected Danny had more brains than to think she would be so dumb as not to realise a dinosaur was approaching her, and so slow to react when the predator attacked. She almost was disappointed that he had been hoodwinked by her so easily.
She had survived eight years between raptors, T. rexes and other dangerous creatures, for crying out loud. Had no one briefed him properly about Helen Cutter and the possibility of encountering clones?
With Lester around she certainly would have had more problems in luring Quinn through the Anomalies. But the stiff bureaucrat was too busy consoling his daughter after a bicycle accident.
She just hoped Lester would never get to know that his little darling had been bribed with the promise of a pet to make up that story, and the small bruises on her leg and arm had actually come from a fight with a class mate.
It would be devastating for the man and in a strange way she had started to care for the people Nick had worked with on the Anomaly project.
Helen sighed. Now all she had to do was rescue Abby and Connor from the Jurassic and destroy all the data Sarah Paige had needed to develop the Anomaly control system. Then finally the future would be safe.
She still couldn't believe she had been so wrong all the time. She had killed two people for nothing at all. Her husband and Christine Johnson were dead, even though Danny Quinn had been responsible for the disaster all along.
To get the helicopter out of the Cretaceous had already been hard work and it had cost the life of her last two cleaner clones. But then the careless moron had introduced a virus into the past. The Epstein-Barr virus, normally not dangerous for humans, had played havoc with the genetic code of the prehistoric animals and a dangerous branch line of creatures had evolved in the future as a result.
She found it fitting that the man who would have destroyed the human race would now spend the rest of his life in the time period where the evolution of human beings had started.
Throwing a last glance at Danny in the distance, she opened a portal to the Jurassic.
If she hurried, she could still fetch the Welsh terrier puppy from the dog pound for Lester's daughter, and get the border collie for herself, the one with the blue eyes who had looked at her in the same friendly way her husband used to do, and who was probably just so faithful as Nick had been.
With a faint smile on her face, Helen Cutter stepped through the Anomaly, in almost the same manner as she had done eight years ago in the Forest of Dean...
