James Lester was agitated when they stepped into his hospital room.
"After all that drip-feed they give me a straw and a bowl of soup which tastes like dishwater. How can I get my strength back with junk like that? I'm absolutely capable of eating a proper meal and I haven't forgotten how to use cutlery."
"Good morning to you too," the clone said, unimpressed by Lester's ranting.
"Quinn, why have you brought him here? He still looks like the walking dead."
Danny grimaced and beat a hasty retreat. Lester regretted his words instantly when Nick turned around and followed Quinn out of the room. He sank back on the bed and closed his eyes in defeat.
A quarter of an hour later, Nick walked back in with a plastic dish of strawberries, melons, apples and mandarine pieces.
"It's not a proper meal either but it certainly tastes better than dishwater. And it has lots of vitamins as well."
"I thought you had gone," Lester whispered with a lump in his throat.
"Just to the nearest fruit shop with Danny. You should have realised by now that a few unfriendly remarks won't drive me away."
Nick sat down beside the bed and held out a fork to Lester. "Now enjoy your meal. Or would you prefer me to feed you?"
Lester snatched the fork and the dish with a growl and tucked into the fresh fruit pieces with delight.
Nick watched the clumsy way James held the bowl with his left hand and smiled affectionately.
"Thank you. That was delicious." Lester put the empty bowl and the fork on the bedside cabinet.
"It was Danny's idea. I wanted to get you lamb filet but he said that would be too much for your stomach at the moment."
"You seem to get along well with Danny Quinn."
The clone hadn't noticed the undertone in Lester's voice and answered, "He's a nice guy. The whole team is great and we have worked well together last night."
Lester furrowed his brow when Nick told him about the Anomaly.
"Why did he take you with him? You should be getting some rest and not fighting with dangerous animals."
"It was just one animal and I didn't fight with it. Besides I wanted to go with him. I was wide-awake anyway after he'd tried to get up quietly."
"I understand. So you slept in his flat?"
"No, I didn't. Actually he slept in our flat. I hope you don't mind."
"I think you should go home now and catch up on some sleep," Lester said tonelessly.
The clone became irritated. "I've had enough sleep and I intend to stay here with you."
"That isn't necessary. The doctor wants to do some tests later and I think it's better you leave now."
Lester didn't look at him but Nick could sense his tension. He went back over the talk in his mind and suddenly understood the problem.
"You're assuming I've been slept with Danny, aren't you? You're wrong. He spent the night on the couch and I slept in my bed. I like to talk with him. He's funny and can be great company. But there are things I only want to do with one special person."
Nick gently touched Lester's cheek and was glad when he leaned into the touch.
"You have every right to do what you want, where you want. It was just the thought that you might have been with someone else, in my flat..."
The clone smiled, pleased. "It's good to hear you care. But I'm not interested in Danny Quinn. And he certainly isn't interested in me. When he told me how he got involved in the Anomaly project, every second sentence started with the name of Jenny Lewis. So tell me, when does the doctor want to come for the tests?"
Lester blushed and looked down at the bedcovers. "The tests starting tomorrow. Today I should just rest."
"All right. Then we'll do this. Move over!"
Lester's breath hitched when Nick slipped out of his shoes and designer jeans and climbed onto the bed.
"This is a hospital. You can't..."
"Hush. We have a few hours before the nurses check up on you again and we both know you will feel better with me touching you. I miss it too. I couldn't sleep properly without you by my side."
"I needed a sleeping tablet last night. I don't like hospitals.," Lester confessed and snuggled against Nick.
"Tonight I'll make sure you won't need a sleeping pill, James" the clone whispered and put his arm around Lester.
It was 6 pm when Danny Quinn walked into the hospital room and stared in shock at the sight on the bed before he hurried out again.
The few seconds had been enough to take in every important detail.
Lester, on the bed with his eyes closed and his mouth open, gasping for breath, his fingers gripping the sheets to stifle a groan whilst the movements under the bedcover indicated what he was enjoying so much.
Danny knew it had to be the clone under the bedcovers. Usually such things didn't come as part of the standard service in a hospital. He didn't know if he should feel appalled or amused by this episode and started to pace in the corridor.
When a nurse with a tablet tray slowly approached, Danny quickly moved to Lester's hospital room and knocked on the door.
The clone, a little disheveled but obviously pleased, opened the door a moment later. "Just a moment, Danny, and we can go."
The nurse smiled as Nick gave the patient a brief kiss and left the room.
"Sir James, here is your dinner and your sleeping pills for the night."
A very relaxed looking Lester thanked her for the meal but declined the sleeping pill.
"I 've got the feeling I can sleep without medication tonight," he answered, drowsily and licked his lips where the taste of Nick and his own semen still lingered.
Danny Quinn cleared his throat as Nick walked with him to the car. "You have an unusual way of dealing with Lester."
Nick regarded Danny quizzically. "It's just the most natural and fastest way to calm him down."
"Do you have to do that often?"
"Usually only when his team was involved in some trouble or other," Nick smirked.
"And what's it like with a man?" the question slipped out of Danny's mouth unintentionally and he blushed instantly.
"If you are so interested, why don't you find out for yourself."
"You mean you and I?" Danny asked, wide-eyed.
The look Nick threw at him made Danny feel like an idiot, which he probably was at the moment.
"I meant with someone else. I will not cheat on James."
"Oh no. I don't think I'm bent that way. Forget it. It was a stupid question."
Danny Quinn was glad that the clone had dropped the topic although he still glanced at him now and then in amusement.
