Leek sat on the doorstep of his flat and watched the dog on the other side of the street. Leek didn't know where the dog had come from. He wore no collar but his fur was thick and neat. He didn't look like a stray.

The dog just sat on the footpath and gazed over at him. Every time people came closer he moved behind a tree and let them pass. It seemed he'd already learnt from experience that you couldn't trust humans.

The dog reminded him of the crossbreed his best friend had had for a pet. But that had been almost 30 years ago. It couldn't be the same dog.

Leek grinned when he remembered Richard, the gangly boy with the toothy grin, who had defended him against the cruel kids who liked to make fun of Oliver.

As long Richard and his dog had been there, Oliver had been happy. But four years later his parents had moved to the other side of the country and Oliver had lost his only friend.

Sighing, Leek stood up. It didn't help to dwell on the past. That promise Richard had given him when they had to say goodbye had been broken weeks later anyway. Richard hadn't come when Oliver had needed his help. The arm the gang had broken that day still hurt when it was cold or on rainy days. But his friend's betrayal had hurt more at the time.

Suddenly, the dog started growling and ran into the shadows of the trees. Leek heard the snapping of jaws and the painful cry of a woman.

Then everything was peaceful again. The dog limped from the shadows and took his old place on the footpath, his eyes glowing in the evening sun.

Oliver shook his head. He didn't understand what had just happened. But it was getting late. Tomorrow was a working day and he had to be fit for it.

So he turned around and went back into his flat. His microwave dinner and a film on TV was waiting for him.

Everything was in order. He had accepted he would never be a big-wig. He was just a little civil servant who did his best in his job. But Oliver Leek liked his boring life.

The next morning, the dog had vanished and Oliver forgot all about him.

Two days later, Helen Cutter was brought into the ARC. She had been caught at the latest anomaly, slowed down by a nasty wound on her right leg.
