Sid looked over to a softly snoring Nancy in the basket and huffed in frustration. Sleeping all day was no fun at all.

Why waste precious time when you could be exploring such an interesting flat? You never knew how long you would still have the chance to play hide and seek under the silk bedcovers, slide around on the nice hardwood floor or take a bite from the tasty furniture. Their stay was only temporary, Connor had said.

Sid considered chewing on the solid oak leg of a kitchen chair. Dental care was important after all as he smelled something lovely from the living room. There on the coffee table lay a sparkling red envelope which just called to him with a faint fragrance of lavender and peach.

Their host, James Lester, was really nice. He always went out of his way to keep them occupied with new toys so they didn't get bored whilst Connor was at work. The red suspenders were still Sid's favourite toy and he had spent many hours playing tug of war with Nancy or Connor.

Since Nancy had discovered Lester's red tie she had developed a fetish for red colours and was always on the hunt for a new addiction to her collection. So this envelope was probably meant as a gift for Nancy and would end in her belly except for a small piece she would stash away for later.

She still kept pieces of two red ties, a pair of boxer shorts and Connor's red sock hidden in her basket to nibble on the fabric at bed time.

Sid didn't understand her fascination for that colour. He thought the boxer shorts and the silken ties tasted vile but he had been clever enough not to tell her that. It was better not to argue with a lovesick female.

He still remembered well how Nancy had fallen for Lester that day the man had carried her back into her basket whilst telling her to keep out of his bedroom and then giving her a wooden dumb-bell to chew on. Nancy hadn't stopped babbling about Lester's well-formed jaw which she finally had seen up close, and his strong arms, for the next two days.

Sid had received the same gift from the plastic bag with some strange animals imprinted on it and had happily dedicated himself to the beechwood dumb-bell but he hadn't gone all enamoured of the guy suddenly. He still liked Abby and Connor more.

The Diictodon now observed the living room in disapointment. It seemed Lester hadn't left a gift for him this time. He probably should have shown his gratitude a little and pinched Lester gently in the leg, just like Nancy had done. Or did Lester just like Nancy more than him?

Sid scuttled back into the spare room and considered waking up his mate. But Nancy was snuffling so contentedly, with her nose buried in the red boxer shorts, that Sid decided to let her sleep a little longer.

Perhaps Lester had just forgotten to put his gift out for Sid. It could still be located in his bedroom.

The small creature scurried in direction of the master bedroom and elegantly glided the last few metres to the door. A closed door was just a small obstacle for a gnawing animal and seven minutes later Sid was happily boring his teeth into the shiny patent leather shoes Lester had left for him.

A chortle from the living room told him that Nancy had woken up and had found her present too.

This time Sid would make sure James Lester got to know how truly grateful he and Nancy were for all the nice toys, and started to gnaw a message in the elegant wool-silk jacket he had pulled down from the bed.

A well-bred Diictodon knew how to properly write "Thank you" after all.
