Summary: Sometimes accidents happen with horrible outcomes.
Connor's voice was trembling as he called Danny on Sunday morning. "I killed her. I just drove right over her," he whispered brokenly. "She was just there and now she' is dead. I'm so sorry."
Within minutes Danny was in his clothes and on his way to the place Connor had described. It was a backstreet near Abby's flat.
Danny stopped his car directly behind Abby's Mini and ran over to Connor who was kneeling on the tarmac, hugging himself and rocking to and fro.
With tear-streaked eyes he looked up to Danny. "I didn't mean to kill her. You have to believe me."
"Hush, Connor. I know you're not a killer. It was an accident, right?"
Connor nodded fervently as a new stream of tears welled up in his eyes and rolled down his cheeks. "I didn't see her. She was suddenly on the road. As I hit the brakes it was already too late. Everything went so fast. I'm sorry."
Connor hugged himself harder and stared woefully at the dirty ground. Danny put his hand on Connor's shoulder and squeezed lightly.
"It's all right, Connor. I'll deal with it. Just stay put. I'll be back in a minute."
Danny moved towards the Mini with trepidation. He saw a small bloodstain near the left front tyre and feared what he would find in front of the car.
Connor had his eyes closed and was again rocking back and forth as Danny returned to his side. Somehow it seemed Connor had something stashed away under his coat.
Danny tried not to think about what it could be. The boy was obvious a nervous wreck.
"Do you think she suffered?" Connor asked timidly.
"No, Connor. You hit her with full force. I don't think she felt anything. I'll make some calls now. Then I'll take you home. OK?" he said gently.
"Thank you," Connor whispered, exhausted.
He slowly stood up and followed Danny to his motorbike with his arms still wrapped protectively around his upper body.
"Connor. I think it's better to leave that here. Someone will come and take care of everything."
"No," Connor said determined and took a step backwards as Danny grabbed for him.
"OK. I understand. I'll walk you home. We can't use the motorbike if you insist on carrying that with you. Don't want to lose parts on the drive, right?"
Connor's lips turned up in a small smile. "Yeah."
Danny sighed deeply. Perhaps Lester had been right to insist on regular psychological checkups for the team.
As they walked side by side to Abby's flat, Connor suddenly cried out, "Oh God, Abby is going to kill me if she finds out I've taken her car while she had a girl's night out with Sarah and Jenny."
Danny looked down at the five orphaned hedgehogs in Connor's arms and thought that wasn't the only thing Connor had to worry about.
