Summary: Jenny has a dark obsession and goes for help.
Jenny had always managed to hide her dark secret.
The only person privy to it was her best friend, Ellen, and only because she had shared a flat with Jenny for two years while they were at university.
But Ellen had been sworn to secrecy over the body of her favourite stuffed rabbit, and would never betray her out of fear Jenny might carry out the threat to dismember her beloved childhood cuddly toy.
At one point, Jenny had considered telling her fiance about her obsession.
But before she came around to actually telling him, she had started working for the ARC and their relationship had gone downhill from there.
In the end it had been just as well. Her fiance would definitely have revealed her secret to her mother, and probably given Heather Lewis a heart attack.
Her mother always had tried to raise her to become what she called a proper woman, a dedicated house wife for a wealthy man, and Jenny had fought her with teeth and nails at every single step of that plan.
Since she had finished her studies, Jenny had only seldom pursued her passion. The need to act on her dark desire only fell upon her if she was under too much stress. And her life before the ARC had been relatively peaceful. No reason to run like mad through the city for carrots.
But there was plenty of stress in a job where crazy dinosaurs and equally crazy scientists and soldiers chased each other.
So Jenny had given in to her desire on weekends first. Since Sarah had started flirting with her and Cutter had ignored every attempt to get to know him better, Jenny couldn't stop herself doing it in every free hour she had. It was always so satisfying.
Jenny cursed the man at the small shop around the corner for tending to her dark obsession. He always had fresh carrots handy and she just couldn't resist his charm.
Now she was paying the price for the few moments of weakness. Soon all would see what she had done. She could not hide her growing stomach behind loose-fitting clothes forever.
On the spur of the moment Jenny came to a decision. She needed help. There must be other people who were just as obsessed as her. Perhaps they could resist together.
On Saturday evening, Jenny slowly climbed the small podium. Taking a deep breath, she prepared to reveal her horrible secret to the crowd.
"Hi. My name is Jenny."
"Hi, Jenny," the people greeted her in return.
"I'm a stress baker. If the stress gets too much I bake carrot cakes, lots and lots of carrot cakes. Afterwards I throw them in the bin. But because I feel guilty for wasting food, I've taken to eat a slice of every third cake. I have put on a stone since I started my new job."
Friendly faces smiled sympathetically up at her, and Jenny returned the smile with relief. Knowing she was not the only one with a baking obsession was already making her feel a little better.
Then she spied Captain Becker in the crowd, nibbling on a chocolate cookie while James Lester tried to creep out through the door on the other side of the room.
After the initial shock Jenny couldn't help but starting chuckling.
'Perhaps we should just close the ARC and open a bakery together,' she thought before she collapsed in a fit of laughter.
