Summary: There are other reasons why Stephen cares for Abby and Connor so much.

His mum had told him his dad had another family somewhere. That his father had gone back to his wife, daughter and son when he was little.

Connor had often pondered what his siblings looked like and if they loved dinosaurs as much as he did. On some days he wished they lived nearby so he could play with them. They certainly wouldn't laugh at him like the other kids did.

Abby's father had yelled in drunken rage that his other son was a smart, well-behaved boy and a thousand times better than her and her stupid baby brother. That was the night she started to hate them; her father and that unknown half-brother.

Connor had nothing other than a crumpled photograph of a young man with a broad smile, with the letters J. H. written in pencil on the back. His mother had never revealed the full name of his dad. And all his hacking skills had been in vain because the full name wasn’t written down anywhere. His birth certificate stated: 'father unknown'.

Abby had been glad when her father had left them to get cigarettes on a rainy evening and had never returned. Perhaps he had gone back to his other son to mistreat him for a while. She had happily learned to write her new last name, Maitland, her mother’s maiden name. It sounded so much more melodious than Hart anyway.

Stephen hated his new stepfather. The bastard always said his own children were smarter and better looking than him. Stephen had yelled and demanded to know why the fuck he didn't go back to them and leave him and his mum alone.
It had earned him a split lip and a broken right arm. And it had taken away the last thing he had inherited from his late father; the wonderful wrist watch he had always worn with pride.

The next time, Stephen hadn't dared to fight back, not even when he had been forced to wear a new surname after his mum had married the brute. Instead, Stephen had thought about those other kids who now could live without fear. He didn't believe for a moment that John Hart had treated his own children any better than he was treating him.

A wave of protective feelings had surged through him for that little girl and the two boys he had heard so much about. At least they were safe as long as he endured the pain.

Connor instantly fell for Abby. She was everything he had always wished for in a girl and she liked dinosaurs as well. And there was Stephen, nice and understanding like the big brother he'd never had. Working together with them under Cutter's command was great. Finally Connor had found his place in life. Sometimes it felt like they were just one big caring family at the Home Office. Of course, only if you excluded Lester. But Lester was just the distant big boss anyway and not part of the team.

Abby had instantly felt drawn to the good-looking lab assistant, even if his last name sounded familiar and brought back bad childhood memories which she had buried deep in her mind a long time ago.
She still didn't understand her mixed feelings for Connor through. One moment she wanted to hug him and the other second she hated him with a vengeance and wanted nothing other than to see him suffer. Perhaps one day she would been be able to work it out.

Stephen liked them both, the geeky young man and the feisty blonde girl. They were good people and he was proud to be their friend.

He never questioned his feelings through. What did it matter that he couldn't figure out why he loved them unconditionally despite that the way Connor quirked his lips sometimes made him freeze in fear and that Abby's angry look sent spikes of pain through his right arm. He just knew he had to keep them safe, even at the cost of his own life.

James Lester stared long and hard at the papers he had got from an old friend working in the archive of the Secret Intelligence Service. It seemed John Hart had got around a lot in his work for MI6 before he had been hit by a car thirteen years ago.

After some more consideration Lester took the whole file to the shredder.

Some things had better stay secret.

And he would keep silent until it was absolutely necessary to disclose the truth. At the moment there was no need to open old wounds in these three young people. After all his fucked-up cousin John had already caused enough damage.
