"Perhaps you should reconsider your intention to help Miss Maitland in the holding area, Mister Barrows."

Thomas glanced at his new boss whose mirth about his second mishap was a little too obvious.

"Does it always behave so aggressively?"

"Well, usually Geronimo is as meek as a lamb. But until now no one has tried to play games with him before giving him food."

With a sigh, Thomas took the icepack away from under his right eye, revealing a nice shiner.

He had long since regretted his earlier cockiness in Jenny's and Abby's presence. Apparently mammoths were quite different from their descendants. Whilst the tame elephants he had encountered in Nepal had always loved to search for their dainties the Columbian mammoth had got quite drastically to get the banana.

"Is there a room I could work in? Connor has asked for my help with something physics related. Perhaps I can at least be of use with that."

"I have ordered an office to be prepared for you, right next to Cutter's."

"Thanks."

Barrows sounded rather bleak, which prompted Lester to add, "Give it a rest and stop trying to impress people by playing the cool cat. That doesn't work here."

"I’ve already realised that. I’ve managed to make a complete fool out of myself on my first day here."

"I wouldn't worry about that too much. The team is used to it."

"Very reassuring."

"Perhaps it will help you to know that the people here appreciate good intentions and value hard workers. They don't bear grudges for long."

"Does that also apply to dinosaurs and mammoths?"

There was a wry smile on Lester's lips when he answered, "Next time you try to woo Geronimo bring him a peach or apricots. He loves them to death. And you’d better give it to him right away before he gets too eager."

"You wouldn't know a trick to woo Jenny and Abby as well?" Thomas asked with a grin, some of his former spirit already returning to him.

Perhaps it was due to the fact that Thomas Barrows had a little of Cutter's charming personality that Lester was infected by the younger man's playful mood.

"I would try the common bribery methods. A fruit basket probably won’t work with the ladies."

Thomas gave a brief laugh, then pressed his icepack back against his shiner with a wince.

"I'm better heading off home before someone else decides to have a go at me. At least it can only get better from now on, right?"

Lester preferred not to answer, his good mood already dwindling again. Experience had taught him that it always could get worse.

Already on the way to the exit, Thomas turned around. "By the way who is taking care of the animals if Abby is on leave or doesn’t feel well? Maybe I can start on a better footing with him or her."

"Currently we're a little short on personnel but I plan to remedy that soon. Have a nice evening, Mr Barrows."

"Thank you. You too."

Lester pursed his lips as he again read the short report he had received a while ago about the re-awoken clones. Barrows had given him an idea of how to solve the newly-arisen problem at the facility where the clones were currently being held.

"Little Tommy looked a little disenchanted. It hasn't been such a great start for him, has it?"

Nick's voice was laced with humour but there also was a hint of repentance and even disappointment. He could have given Thomas a few instructions about how to behave with the mammoth beforehand and so spared him the embarrassment and pain. But he had hoped the young man had finally grown up and wouldn't do something stupid again.

"Give it a few days and he might surprise us all."

"That's what I'm afraid of. Where does this sudden leap of faith come from?"

Without realising it, a jealous undertone had crept in Nick's voice and he was watching Lester like a hawk.

"Nick, did you forget your sedative this morning?"

"How do you know?"

When Lester crooked his eyebrow, Nick blushed slightly.

"So obviously, huh? But you have to admit he's in better shape than me. And we do have an uncanny resemblance to each

other."

"Only on the outside, Nick. Where it really counts you are quite different."

"James, you are amazing, you know. I get all green-eyed, for no good reason, and you just alleviate my fears with a few  words. If I wasn't already madly in love with you I’d fall for you all over again."

"Have you just come over to tell me how admirable I am?" Lester asked, flustered. "Or is there an actual reason behind your visit?"

Nick watched with amusement how a red tinge had emerged on Lester's cheeks. He should probably spout endearments a lot more often. James looked good all embarrassed.

"I wanted to ask what you intend to do with the deinonychus?"

"Certainly not kill it," was Lester's sharp reply.

"But something has to happen. With the mammoth and now the deinonychus to take care of, Abby doesn't know whether she's coming or going. Perhaps you should consider moving the animals somewhere else?"

"Geronimo stays here. And so does the deinonychus. As for our manpower shortage in the holding area I think I just have found a resolution. You remember Bryan and William?"

"Helen's clones?"

"Yes, the rest of them woke up last night and that has caused a lot of trouble. Not for the staff, mind you. The scientists are happy to have more people they can poke and prod but our dutiful male nurses aren’t so enamoured of this development. Bryan and William are devastated they have no one they can cater for anymore. They’re also irritating their comrades because they separate themselves to spend time alone with each other whilst the other clones are apparently used to doing everything together."

"They have developed into individuals whereas the others still act as a collective."

"Exactly. I guess a hospital or a nursing home would be the right working environment for the two. But due their unique heritage my superiors would never allow them to work outside a high security level institution. Besides two men making out openly and looking exactly the same would not go over well with most people."

"So you have hired them as some sort of zookeepers?"

"It's the most I can do. People here will understand their situation and accept them. At least I hope so. You will probably think I'm an sentimental fool."

"No, James, that's a wonderful idea. You’re brilliant."

"Oh, the sweet talking, again. I might almost start to assume you want something specific from me."

"Of course, I want something specific from you," Nick said with a glitter in his eyes.

Bending over Lester's desk so he could whisper against his lover's ear, Nick purred, "Your mouth around my woody and your cock deep in my arse."

"To do both at the same time might prove to be very difficult. I'm not a contortionist," Lester managed to croak out, a flush now spreading over his entire face.

"One at a time will do. How quickly can you finish up here?"

Lester swiftly shoved a few papers in a folder and got up from the chair.

"All done," he announced in the face of Nick's amused chuckle.

Connor blinked in surprise as Lester and Cutter passed them with a brief, "Goodbye," and rushed out through the swing doors.

Turning, worried, to Abby and Babyface, he asked, "They are in real hurry. Do you think something has happened?"

"Highly unlikely," Abby replied. "There’d be more bustle around the ARC if there was a problem. It looked to me like they just want to get home fast."

"Why should...? Oh..."

Babyface rolled his eyes and muttered, "And he’s called smart."

"Perhaps we should finish up as well," Abby said. "I’ve had enough uproar for today. A cosy evening at home would be nice."

This time Connor caught up on the meaning a lot faster than before and almost swept a handheld device from the desk in his haste to pack up his stuff.

Shaking his head, Babyface retreated to the armory where he found Lyle fondling Stephen with his left hand whilst polishing the barrel of his semi-automatic rifle with the other.

"They should spray anti-hormones in the ARC so people get actually some work done," Babyface grumbled and went in search of Finn and Willies, people he could count on not to act all sex-crazed.

Jenny stared in surprise at the long-stemmed white rose lying on her desk with the inscription on the card, "I'm so sorry. Truce? Your moron, Thomas"

Involuntarily she began to laugh. At least the guy knew how to apology with style.
